‘Law & Order: SVU’ Shares Adorable Throwback to Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson Reunion in Season 22 Finale

by Anna Dunn

Law & Order: SVU may be on hiatus, but the Law & Order Twitter is trying to make up for it. This time, the account posted an adorable throwback photo of Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson during the season 22 finale. It’s from a truly touching scene, too.

The Law & Order: SVU finale saw the two former partners reunite in a far more pleasant setting than their action-packed reunion on Law & Order: Organized Crime. Benson and Stabler found each other at a wedding for long-time SVU detective Fin Totula and his fiancée Phoebe. While Fin and Phoebe wound up deciding that they’d rather not get married, the wedding was still a joyous celebration.

Even though Fin and Phoebe decided not to tie the knot, the Law & Order: SVU couple still decided to be together. The photo shows Benson and Stabler watching on as Carisi gave a touching toast to the couple.

“Fin and Phoebe were each other’s first partners. Over 20 years ago. A partnership is a lot like a marriage. You fight, then you make up. But at the end of the day, you always have each other’s backs. And if you had to, you’d take a bullet for each other. A bond like that…That never goes away,” he said.

While the speech was meant for Fin and Phoebe, it’s clear that it resonated quite spectacularly with Benson and Stabler. The two later went on to clink glasses and toast to partners. Needless to say, when the episode first came out, fans lost their minds.

“This moment has been living rent-free in our heads,” the Twitter account wrote. Fans, of course, agreed with the sentiment.

Chris Meloni Returned after Leaving ‘Law & Order: SVU’ Almost a Decade Ago

Chris Meloni shocked fans after departing Law & Order SVU after season 12. After contract disputes, Meloni stepped back, with Elliot Stabler retiring from the force. Many were disappointed by Stabler’s ending on the show, feeling like it was incomplete.

Now, however, Meloni is back with Law & Order: Organized Crime. Organized Crime follows Stabler’s return to the force after the murder of his wife in an assassination attempt meant for him. So why the change of heart?

“Things in my personal life fell into place, which made it correct and right for me to say yes to the offer,” he told Variety. When he was on his ten-year break from the Law & Order universe, Meloni was acting in other projects and spending time with family.

Now, fans are enjoying seeing Benson and Stabler interact again through crossover events. More crossover events are planned for next year. With COVID-19 complicating schedules last year, crossover events were hard, but producers are excited for what’s to come.

Law & Order: SVU will return in the Fall. While Meloni isn’t a regular on the series, he will almost definitely make appearances on the show. Law & Order: Organized Crime and a brand new Law & Order: For the Defense will air alongside SVU on Thursday nights.
