Mariska Hargitay’s Law & Order: SVU character Olivia Benson often has trouble balancing her professional and personal life. It seems Hargitay experiences a similar issue in real life, once talking about the struggles of juggling fame with motherhood.
In a US Weekly interview, Hargitay was very candid about balancing work and play. “It’s hard. I’m not going to say it’s easy, it’s hard. I’m learning to [balance]. I try to be super present with where I am,” Hargitay explained. “When I’m at work, I’m at work. When I’m with my kids, I’m with my kids.”
Despite the difficulty, Hargitay said her husband Peter Hermann is incredible to have by her side. Having three kids on top of a hectic schedule isn’t easy, but he helps make it work. “I have an incredible support system with my husband. He’s an actor so he also understands. I try to keep it organic. The kids come to set all the time. I have worked out my schedule a bit that I have a little more flexibility. I have a great time behind me.”
“Nevertheless, some days are worse than others. There are days I go home and just cry. There have been days when I didn’t see my kids. Those are the days I’m, like, ‘Maybe I’m done.'” Luckily, being on the show as long as she has been, it seems everyone there has an understanding. “But now, this is a gift of doing something for 20 years. We’re such a well-oiled machine. I go in there and I’m like, ‘Guys, I’ve got a kids thing. I’m out.’ They’re like, ‘Got it, boom.'”
Hargitay and Hermann married in 2004 and have 3 kids, aged 11, 7, and 6 together.
Mariska Hargitay Couldn’t Watch ‘Law & Order: SVU’s’ 500th Episode
To say Mariska Hargitay is a Law & Order veteran is putting it lightly. Playing Olivia on SVU for 23 seasons, she has quite a reputable history. Interestingly, after recording the 500th episode, she couldn’t bring herself to watch it.
Live with Kelly and Ryan interviewed her about the incredible milestone this month. While she was understandably excited, she expressed being nervous more than anything. “They sent me the link so many times and I was actually too nervous to watch it,” she told the hosts.
“Obviously, I’ve been doing this show for so long and Olivia Benson is in me, but I think that the idea of the 500th episode was so much pressure or something on me,” Hargitay continued. “And I was so nervous coming to work this day.”
She concludes the interview by saying this episode served almost as a point of reflection to take in what they all made with the show. Regardless, you never would have guessed how nervous she was based on her performance in the episode.
