Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay and husband Peter Hermann celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary Saturday.
The traditional gift for No. 17 is furniture. But we prefer a simple look back at the elegant day. It’s far less cumbersome and you don’t need two people to move the gift.
Hargitay’s wedding did have a Hollywood feel to it. But the reception for 200 wasn’t in-your-face extravagant.
Hargitay was marrying Hermann, whom she met in November, 2001 on the set of Law & Order: SVU. As we all know, Hargitay in Olivia Benson on the show. Hermann joined the cast as a recurring character. He played a defense attorney.
The two actually had their first date at church, following a long conversation about religion. Hargitay said she knew immediately that Hermann was the right man for her. After all, she was 37. Life experience helps.
Christopher Meloni, who played Olivia Benson’s partner on Law & Order: SVU, said he realized immediately that Hargitay and Hermann clicked.
“He’s on the show as a guest actor, and I’m looking at her, looking at him, and I’m seeing how she’s acting, right? Meloni told People. “I know her, and I’m like, ‘Oh boy. Here we go.’ And she’s just, ‘Tee-hee, tee-hee, I don’t even care about him or anything like that.'”
“I just thought, ‘Oh my God, it’s like I’m back in high school, or even grade school,'” Meloni said. “Sure enough, they start dating.”
Mickey Hargitay, Mariska’s dad, accompanied his daughter to the wedding. They rode to the church in a vintage Jaguar. Jayne Mansfield, Mariska’s mother, was killed when Mariska was 3. To remember her at her wedding, Mariska carried a locket with her mother’s picture in it. She also put in a photo of her grandmother.
‘Law & Order: SVU’ Star Married in Santa Barbara Church
The beautiful couple was married at the Unitarian Historical Church in Santa Barbara. Hargitay tweaked tradition by wearing a pale pink Carolina Herrera gown. Hermann’s name and the date of the wedding were stitched into the dress.
Hermann proposed to the Law & Order: SVU star and when she said yes, he presented her with a platinum band with nine diamonds.
Meloni was among the 200 guests at the reception. So were actors Jodie Foster, Hilary Swank, and Chad Lowe.
The reception included a seated dinner. The couple picked out a seven-foot chocolate and vanilla cake with six tiers. The cake was vibrant with its colors, with a palette of orange, green, and magenta. Plus, their initials were spelled out in Swarovski crystals.
As the Law & Order: SVU star and her new husband left the church for the reception, a gospel choir sang Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. At the reception, the first dance was to Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
After the wedding, the couple continued to add to their family. Two years later, Mariska had a baby boy August. But the pregnancy was a tough one. The couple adopted daughter, Amaya, in 2011, then two months later, they made plans to add Andrew to the family.
