Each holiday season, Lisa Marie Presley makes a trip to the place that will forever hold a big spot in her heart and in history — the Graceland mansion.
This was where she spent a portion of her childhood years alongside her parents, rock ‘n’ roll icon Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley. She spent her early years at this estate in Memphis, Tennessee. However, her parents eventually divorced when she was only 4 years old. This meant she would no longer spend as much time in the gorgeous home laced with music history.
Lisa Marie Presley and Holidays at Graceland
When Elvis sadly passed away, he left the mansion to her in 1977. Then, starting in 1982, Lisa Marie Presley decided to open to home to tours.
Since then, she still stops by for very meaningful visits to her childhood home around Christmas time. This is probably because she has such fond memories of time spent there during the holidays. “It was his favorite time of year. He was like a kid. He loved to pick out gifts… would tell the jeweler to bring over pieces,” Priscilla Presley once said, according to Express.
Elvis Presley was known for his lavish gift-giving, so it comes as no surprise this was a huge part of Christmas for him.
Despite just how popular the house is to the public, Lisa Marie still treats it like a family home. She tends to bring family and friends over on Thanksgiving and Christmas. She has three daughters — Riley, Harper, and Finley. Her only son, Benjamin, died last year.
“Christmas at Graceland for Lisa is always a very special time of the year. In fact, today she still brings her family here to celebrate the holidays. Graceland is a very special place not only for fans but also for Lisa. It’s home to her. And when Lisa’s here and has dinner here at the house, we flip the switch and turn all of this on,” Angie Marchese, the director of archives at Graceland, said. She is one of the few people that have access to the bedrooms upstairs in the house.
Although they come to visit, the family doesn’t necessarily spend the night there. There are also certain modifications that Graceland has in order to make it so the family can still enjoy their time there, as can the public as well.
Priscilla Presley Talks About Elvis’ Christmas Tunes
Clearly, it’s no surprise that the Presley family loves Christmas time.
Although Elvis went all out both in gift-giving and decorating during the holiday season, he would rarely sing his famous Christmas tunes. In an interview on Elvis’ YouTube Channel, Priscilla said that he was too shy to sing his Christmas music in the house unless there was a big group there to sing along.
For Priscilla, there was one that meant the most to her.
“And I think the fondest one for me personally is ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas.’ Being at home for Christmas at all times was very important for him. Whether he was doing a movie or on tour, getting back home to Graceland was really what he was looking forward to,” she said.
