What goes on behind the scenes of some of our most beloved television shows can often be as dramatic as what happens on the screen. But, often it’s not so dramatic. This was the case when it comes to the relationship between two actresses on “Little House on the Prairie.”

The actresses in question are Melissa Gilbert and Alison Arngrim. Gilbert played Laura Ingalls – one of the daughters of Charles Ingalls, who was played by Michael Landon, on the show. Arngrim played a character most people saw as a pest. That character’s name was Nellie Olsen.

At times, Gilbert’s Laura and Arngrim’s Nellie were at odds. This led some fans to assume that Gilbert and Arngrim were at odds in real life. However, according to Arngrim, the two actresses actually did get along in real life on the set of “Little House on the Prairie.”

Arngrim talked about this during an interview with FoxNews.com. And, she said that she and Gilbert became friends very quickly while they were working on “Little House on the Prairie.”

“It’s funny, I think if you play enemies on set you end up becoming friends. We hit it off right away. We had slumber parties. … visit each other’s houses on weekends – people couldn’t believe it,” Arngrim said during the interview.

What has made their friendship interesting is that fans through the years have felt like Arngrim was actually out to get Gilbert in real life.

“I remember we were 13 and at a supermarket together. She went over to one aisle to look for something and people recognized us,” Arngrim also said. “And they suddenly felt compelled to protect her from me, like I was coming for her. People were just freaked out that we were friends and would go to places together. We still do.”

Even people who knew Alison Arngrim and Melissa Gilbert thought the two actresses would be at odds with one another thanks to all that happened between their characters on “Little House on the Prairie.” Arngrim shared a story of one such instance with FoxNews.com.

“I remember she had a party and we were well into our 40s at this point. We’re all standing in the kitchen and this one woman goes, ‘It’s so good to see you two getting along now.’ Melissa and I had no clue what she was talking about. We just froze,” Arngrim said. “And then Melissa goes, ‘Wait, was there a tabloid story or something?’ We just looked at each other. It felt like forever. And then finally Melissa went, ‘Oh you mean the show!'”

Arngrim also told FoxNews.com that she and Melissa Gilbert always got along with one another.

“The truth is, there wasn’t a point where we didn’t like each other… People still assume that we hate each other. But we’re very much friends,” Arngrim said. “We text and talk all the time. Some of us stay in touch on social media … The cast has become a family. We check in on each other all the time.”
