For “Little House on the Prairie” star Melissa Gilbert, being a childhood star has not resulted in her currently having millions and millions of dollars in the bank.

Gilbert began her acting career at a young age. She was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1964. Her first acting gigs came on television on in commercials.
It was in 1974 that she began acting as the character that would make her famous. That, of course, was the role of Laura Ingalls on “Little House on the Prairie.” According to IMDb.com, Gilbert bested 500 other young actresses to land the role on the famous family show. Gilbert stood out so much that her screen test was the sole test that was delivered to NBC for review.
Interestingly, it was Leslie Landon, the daughter of the show’s star Michael Landon, that told Gilbert she had been cast on “Little House on the Prairie.” Landon’s daughter broke the news to her while they were waiting for lunch one day at school. “Little House on the Prairie” stayed on the air until 1983. Gilbert’s work on “Little House on the Prairie” earned her two Young Artist Awards. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

After her time on the “prairie” came to an end, Melissa Gilbert found work in feature films and television movies. Among these were “Sylvester,” “Killer Instinct,” “Shattered Trust: The Shari Karney Story,” and “Hollywood Wives: The New Generation” to name a few.
She received praise for her role as Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker.” This role earned her an Emmy nomination in 1980. She also voiced the character of Batgirl in the “Batman: The Animated Series.” This show aired from 1992 until 1994.
The early 2000s saw Gilbert become president of the Screen Actors Guild. She served in this role from 2001 until 2005. She decided not to run for another term as the organization’s president. It was during 2009 that Gilbert released her book. Titled, “Prairie Tale: A Memoir,” the book shared details about Gilbert’s time on the show and her life in the years that followed.
In 2013, the “Little House on the Prairie” star reportedly ran into trouble with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Apparently, she owed $112,000 to the IRS. Two years later, news also came to light that Melisa Gilbert owed the agency $360,000
Gilbert reportedly shared this statement about her troubles with the IRS: “Like so many people across the nation, the recession hit me hard. That, plus a divorce and a death of acting opportunities the last few years, created a perfect storm of financial difficulty for me.”
