‘Little House on the Prairie’ Actor Melissa Gilbert Opened Up About Her Kids’ Struggle with Addiction

Melissa Gilbert played Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie for nine seasons. She was only ten years old when won the role on the television show. Almost immediately she was exposed to life in Hollywood.

Gilbert was exposed to things like alcohol at a young age, and it had an incredible impact on her life. Not a positive one, though. For young stars, it is hard to stay clean and sober. Even though she had her own struggles with addiction, she was able to overcome her issues. But, it was a lot of hard work and no easy task.

However, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2012, the Little House on the Prairie star opened up about her struggles. She also opened up about how her children grappled with addictions as well. The subject was certainly not an easy thing for her to talk about.

“So there’s more pressure, I think, on the young actors and actresses today than there ever was when I was growing up. Three of my boys have walked through some difficulties. One with a real problem with cocaine,” Gilbert pauses for a long while before continuing.

“One with alcohol. So, I think I come at this issue from many different directions and many different angles,” she explained.

The interviewer asked how she dealt with their issues, and who she turned to for support. The Little House on the Prairie star explained that when she was able to recognize that she needed help, she turned to experts. Gilbert also said that she joined a 12-step program.

Gilbert continued to say that she felt that she needed to be as honest as possible with her kids. She said that she shared everything she possibly could with her youngest son. All of this was done in earnest to help him know that there was always support out there for him. She said, “He’s the one who asked me to stop drinking.”

In the end, the Little House on the Prairie star was able to get the help she needed for her children. It certainly was not an easy task, but it worked out for the best.

Being able to talk openly about addiction struggles is not an easy thing to do. At the very least, educating others on the dangers of abusing any kind of drug is helpful. For her, being open and honest seems to be the most important way to address issues with substance abuse.
