As much as “Little House on the Prairie” gives its stars a platform, one star says she could only get one type of role later in her career.

Actress Karen Grassle, who is Caroline Ingalls on the NBC family drama, seemed to just get sweet parts after the show.

“Well, as you know, from ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ I’m more known for playing the good woman in roles,” Grassle said in a 2018 interview with World Film Geek. “When I was younger, I’ve always played more (an) innocent-type character.

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Star Welcomed Horror Movie Role

“Every once in a while, I get my teeth into something different,” she said. “So I was very attracted to Lillian because I thought it was such a great character. She has such a big ego, thought highly of herself. And I thought I could really have fun with her. Plus, I like the fact that she got to be really tough.”

Grassle refers to Lillian, a role in a horror movie called “Lasso.” In it, Grassle joins a number of feisty seniors who fight against a group of killer cowboys.

For “Little House on the Prairie” fans, seeing “Ma” Ingalls in this type of role is definitely going to shake them up. Fret not, though. Grassle, now 79 years old, probably is pleased to get different roles. This includes roles that put her either in line with the TV character or against it.

She played Caroline Ingalls for eight seasons along side Michael Landon, who played Charles Ingalls. Grassle actually went into a period of retirement before starting to pick up roles again in recent years.

Viewers of the popular family drama continue to watch Grassle in her famed role thanks to reruns.

Grassle Gives ‘Nellie’ Actor Alison Arngrim Lots Of Love For Her Work

In those reruns, be sure to watch for scenes that include Grassle and Alison Arngrim. Arngrim, of course, played the devilish Nellie Oleson on “Little House on the Prairie.”

Grassle said she really liked working with Arngrim.

In a 2001 interview with Barnaby Marriott, Grassle talked about how much better she got with every scene.

Grassle is asked in the interview what Arngrim would be like on the set of “Little House on the Prairie.”

“Alison began to shine as she hit her teen years,” Grassle said. “She wore wonderfully campy ’50s outfits and, when she could drive, got a funny ’50s car.”

That’s high praise coming from such a veteran actress like Grassle toward her younger costar.
