Soap opera actor Marcus Smythe, 70, died due to a three-year battle with brain cancer on Aug. 20 at this home in La Crescenta, California. He is best known for playing the romantic lead on popular soap opera series in 1970s and 80s.
Smythe received his BA in theater from Otterbein University 1972 and a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1975. Then, he moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in acting. He was hired for guest starring roles on TV shows such as Eight Is Enough (1977) and Joe & Valerie (1978).
In 1979, Smythe landed the role of Gordon Middleton on The Guiding Light. In 1982, he then went on to Search for Tomorrow as Dane Taylor, and in 1985 played a two-year role as Peter Love on Another World. He also played General Hospital‘s Martin Ross in 1990, and several years later had a part in Port Charles as Dean Eldridge.
Additionally, Smythe landed several appearances on Seinfeld, Who’s the Boss?, Murphy Brown, Beverly Hills 90210, and Mad About You.
In 2006, he has a role in the TV show Girlfriends and most recently, it’s spin-off, The Game in 2008. His movie credits include the 1981 TV-movie Summer Solstice, and The Story Lady in 1991.
Marcus Smythe is survived by wife Suzanne Goddard, sons Harrison and Duncan, brother Casey, and several nieces and nephews.
A message from the family
In his obituary, Marcus’ family announced that a memorial service will be deferred to an electronic access ceremony. Arrangements for a post-pandemic, in person service are also possible.
In addition, a request issued via Smythe’s obituary states, “In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully encourages contributions to a favorite charity or Democrat in the upcoming election, and wishes to reinforce to everyone that the pandemic is real and asks everyone to please wear a mask.”
