All of us can be too critical of ourselves at times. The same can even be said for famous singer-songwriter Mariah Carey.

There is really no denying just how successful Mariah Carey has been during her career in the entertainment industry. She was the first artist to ever have her first five singles reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. But perhaps the song she is best known for now is her Christmas single “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. She is even referred to as the “Queen of Christmas”.

But despite being known for one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time, Carey says she has always been critical of it in the past. She explained as much in a sit-down with the Associated Press.

“My relationship with that song, which I believe is what you asked, has grown,” she said. “Because when I first wrote it, all I did was critique myself. Like, ‘why did I do that? Why is that like that? I wish I had fixed that.'”

It’s only natural to be critical of ourselves. Especially so when it comes to award-winning artists like Mariah Carey. There is a lot of money on the line, so everything has got to be perfect. But it turns out that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is as close to perfect as a Christmas song could hope to be.

Mariah Carey Recorded Several Versions of Her Hit Song

As a matter of fact, “All I Want for Christmas is You” turned out to be so good that Mariah Carey has recorded several different renditions of the song.

In 2010, she re-recorded the song for her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You, known as the extra festive version. In addition, she recorded a version of the song with pop star Justin Bieber for his 2011 Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe. That version is known as the “Super Festive” version. Not only that, but other famous musicians have recorded their own versions as well.

Carey spoke about that in her recent interview as well. She says that she’s able to embrace the song today instead of being so critical.

“And now there have been so many different versions of the song that I’ve done and that other people have done that I’m like, ‘You know what, I can live with this and love it and accept it and embrace it as part of my Christmas tradition every year. And my kids do too.”

Thanksgiving is now over and it is time to get in the Christmas spirit. But that doesn’t stop Mariah Carey from expressing how thankful she is for what the song has become.

“It’s become this thing that I’m just so thankful for.”
