Martin Scorsese Admits To Not Caring About Making Another Film After ‘Raging Bull’
During a virtual panel at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese admits that he didn’t have a real interest in making another film after his 1980 boxing movie, Raging Bull. Martin acted in and directed the film. Also tarring in the film was Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty, Nicholas Colasanto, and Frank Vincent.
“I made it as if it was pretty much the end of my life,” Scorsese says. He also describes Raging Bull as a “suicide” film and said he didn’t what happened. “I didn’t care if I made another movie.”
Martin also says that in a way the film actually wiped him out. “I had to start all over again,” he explains. “I had to learn again. Every day on the shoot was like, ‘This is the last one, and we’re going for it.’”
Prior to filming Raging Bull, Martin Scorsese says he considered boxing actually boring. “Nothing against sports, but having had severe asthma and [being] told I couldn’t run, I was very sheltered and it kept me from any sports teams. It made me focus on imagination and I went to a lot of movies.”
Martin then discusses how he filmed the boxing classic, saying that in other boxing films, the cameras would remain outside the ring and the audience could only see through the ropes.
“I said, ‘What if you’re in the ring and you’re the boxer?’ How do you see things and hear things?’” He recalls. The iconic director also says that he and his crew stretched time and had to use some slow-motion.
Scorsese’s Raging Bull is a biographical sports drama film. According to IMDb, the film follows the life of boxer Jack LaMotta (Robert De Niro), whose violence and temper that led him to the “top in the ring” manages to destroy his life outside of it. The film won various awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role (De Niro) and Boston Society of Film Critics Awards Best Director (De Niro).
