By the early 1990s, Randy Travis had made a name for himself as a country music star. With his career on a roll, he decided to try his hand at acting. And, he got the opportunity on Andy Griffith’s popular drama “Matlock.”
Flash forward a few years. Andy Griffith is making an appearance on the TNN show “On the Record” hosted by Ralph Emery. The year is 1996 and the beloved television star is talking about both “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Matlock.”
During the interview, Emery told Griffith that there is “a nice surprise” for him.
“When he heard I was coming to Wilmington, North Carolina, to tape a show with you – and he did one recently with me – Randy Travis said, ‘I’d like to be a part of it. I love Andy Griffith.’ I know he was in ‘Matlock’ with you twice. …” Emery said.
With Randy Travis appearing via satellite, he and Griffith had a chance to reminisce about their work together on “Matlock.” The stars are obviously happy to see one another. Travis started their conversation by praising Griffith.
“Working with you on ‘Matlock’ was one of the best things I ever worked – no doubt,” Travis said. “And, I worked on several different television projects, of course. But, I think I had more fun working on ‘Matlock.’ And mainly because of you.”
Unsurprisingly, Griffith was pleased to hear what the sentiments the country music star shared.
“That’s nice of you to say,” the “Matlock” star said.
Randy Travis Said ‘Matlock’ Star Gave Him the Guitar During His Guest Appearance on the Series
“… Do you recall that Andy gave you a guitar?” Ralph Emery asked Randy Travis in 1996.
“Yeah. He sure did,” Travis confirmed. “He had a small handmade guitar and I was admiring that on our last time working together. I was admiring that guitar and a couple days later he had one there and came to the set and gave it to me.”
The guitar Andy Griffith gave the country music star became a treasured possession.
“It’s wonderful,” Randy Travis said. “It’s sitting in the house right now. I pick it up and play it pretty often.”
While Travis is talking about how much he loves the guitar he received from the television star, the show cut to Griffith for a reaction. And, unsurprisingly, he had a big smile on his face. He is obviously very pleased to learn that his gift meant so much to his costar.
In addition to giving Travis a guitar, Griffith also gave him something else during “Matlock” – acting lessons. You can read about that here.
