Two major Hollywood A-listers are joining forces for an upcoming Universal project that is still in the casting process. It is set to come out in July 2023.

Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” “The Martian,” “Still Water,” and “Jason Bourne”) is teaming up with Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Avengers,” “Sherlock Holmes,” and “The Judge”) for “Oppenheimer.” Cillian Murphy (“Peaky Blinders”) has already been cast in the upcoming film as well alongside Emily Blunt (“A Quiet Place.”)

Upcoming ‘Oppenheimer’ Film in 2023

The upcoming movie is a Christopher Nolan biopic that tells the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer. He was one of the creators of the atomic bomb. It is based on the book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.” The authors are Martin J. Sherwin and Kai Bird and the book won a Pulitzer Prize back in 2005. Nolan is directing and writing the script and his wife, Emma Thomas, is producing alongside Charles Roven.

With a really top-notch group of actors so far, the Nolan film is already standing out in the slate of upcoming movies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the “epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.”

As for who these actors will be playing, most of that seems to have been figured out as well. Murphy will play that title role as the infamous theoretical physicist during WWII. Blunt is likely going to play his wife, Katherine Oppenheimer.

Damon is cast as Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, who was the director of the Manhattan Project. Then Downey will play Lewis Strauss, the Atomic Energy Commissioner. Groves was responsible for getting Oppenheimer’s security revoked after questioning his loyalty to the U.S.

Matt Damon Emotional Movie Moment

As for Matt Damon, he is still most known for his stand-out role in the 1997 movie “Good Will Hunting.” Despite a number of other roles over the past 20 years or so, fans of the actor can’t get over his emotional and riveting performance alongside Ben Affleck and the rest of the cast.

The two have since popped up on the screen together again. They wrote and starred in the recent movie, “The Last Duel.” It wasn’t their first writing credit, however. The two had their first writing project with “Good Will Hunting” and also each won their first Oscar from the movie.

The dynamic duo revealed that they actually cried while making the popular ’90s movie. The two started crying when they got to watch Hollywood icons Robin Williams and Stellan Skarsgård act in a movie they wrote.

“Sometimes those moments sneak up on you. And that was another one of those moments we never thought was going to arrive. To see not only actors, but those actors, saying the stuff that we wrote, was like…f***. Just, I guess, a mixture of joy and disbelief. And relief. And gratitude. That would probably be it. That was a really nice moment. I’m not ashamed to say it,” Matt Damon said during an interview with GQ.

When it comes to “Good Will Hunting,” there’s certainly plenty of tears to go around.
