Bad news, Matthew McConaughey supporters. The popular Hollywood actor took to Twitter on Sunday (November 28th) to reveal he is officially not running for Texas governor. This news comes two years of speculations that McConaughey was considering making his political debut in the Lone Star State.

“For the past two years, I’ve been working on the question of how I could be most useful in this life going forward,” Matthew McConaughey explained. “Useful to myself, useful to my family, and the most amount of people. One category of service that I have been exploring is politics.”

Matthew McConaughey did reveal that he has been considering running for governor of Texas. He claimed he has been listening and learning as well as measuring. He has also been studying Texas politics. “What have I learned? A lot. That we have some problems we need to fix. That our politics needs a new purpose. That we have divides that need healing.”

He also stated that great leaders actually serve. “We lead by serving each other. Service is taking on responsibility today so we can have more freedom tomorrow. Service is making the better choice for you and for me.”

Matthew McConaughey then revealed the official update about his decision to run for office. He stated that the political path is the path that he is choosing not to take at the moment. Instead, he is going to continue to work and invest the bounty he has in supporting entrepreneurs, businesses, and foundations that he believes are leaders. “Establishments that I believe are creating pathways for people to succeed in life. Organizations that have a mission to serve and build trust. While also generating prosperity. That’s the American Dream.”

He goes on to add that good politicians can get everyone to where they need to go. But they can’t do anything for everyone unless we support them. He then says cheers to leaders.

Recent Poll Revealed That Matthew McConaughey Could Have Gone Head to Head With Incumbent Governor Greg Abbott

Matthew McConaughey’s announcement comes just days after a poll by the University of Texas and the Dallas Morning News revealed that the Hollywood star was actually beating out other governor candidates. As previously reported, McConaughey was shown to actually be able to go against the Republican incumbent governor Greg Abbott if they both were to run against each other.

The poll showed 43% of respondents would actually vote for Matthew McConaughey, 35% would vote for Abbott, and 22% would consider voting for another opponent. Various politicians in Texas previously shared they had no idea where he stood when it came to politics, including which party he was actually in.

Gilberto Hinojosa, Chair of the Texas Democratic Party, recently told LA Times, “He appears to be simply enjoying the publicity. It doesn’t work that way. He needs to pick a party. Nobody knows what this guy stands for.”
