Matthew McConaughey Reflects on When He First Met Woody Harrelson

They starred together on the hit HBO series True Detective and now Matthew McConaughey is opening up about how he first met Woody Harrelson

While the duo was chatting, Harrelson accursed Matthew McConaughey of not remembering where they actually met. “There was tequila involved that night,” McConaughey admitted. “And it was a bit of an impression. A bit hazy. But we met one night and I always wanted to meet you.”

Matthew McConaughey then shared that he and Harrelson worked together in 1997 on Edtv. “My first relocation post the first time we evidently met was in San Francisco. I’m with Ron Howard. We’re doing wardrobe tests. I’m sitting by a window and looking down one of those hills. Who’s walking down the street? Not because I can see him first, but because I heard [his shoes] first.” 

The actor then continues, “I look down and there’s this guy in bike shorts, professional bike top, and he still got his professional bike riding shoes on that he’s walking the streets of San Francisco in.”

Matthew McConaughey goes on to explain that he learned that was Harrelson. “That was you and you came to basically say, ‘I’m not here for a wardrobe test. I come to this meeting in my wardrobe. And we’re not going to negotiate this.’”

Along with EdTV, and True Detective, McConaughey and Harrelson starred together in Surfer, Dude in 2008.

In 2014, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson spoke to Collider about working together on the set of True Detective. “First of all, I had already worked with HBO on Game Change. There’s just no finer organization making amazing stuff out there than HBO.”

Matthew McConaughey then stated that it was a different time for television. “There’s not that feeling of, if you’re having a successful film career and somebody brings up something on television, [Then you wouldn’t even consider it],” he explained. The actor also noted that at the time he and the rest of the cast didn’t know where it was going to be.

“All I knew is that I read the first two episodes and I was in,” Matthew McConaughey continued. “Iw as just, at the time, looking for quality. So, it wasn’t something that I said, ‘I’m in, but wait a minute, it’s TV.’ That wasn’t a gauge.”

In regards to working with Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey said part of the reason they are friends is that they got on each other’s frequency and they affirm each other and on-up each other. “It can turn into an improvisation but it can go into the ether, and then some.  I have a really big mag full of films, but this is the first time we worked together where there’s real opposition.”
