Matthew McConaughey discussed which country singer he listens to find his “frequency.” Turns out McConaughey is a big Sturgill Simpson fan. He listed the country singer as one of his go-to’s.

In his new Green Lights podcast, the actor discussed finding inspiration through music. Some of the musicians he listens to include U2, Dwight Yoakam, John Mellencamp, Ali Farka Toure, Bob Dylan, and Mishka. And Simpson of course.

“You know, a theory that has helped me out. And I think it can help us all out sometimes is finding our frequency,” McConaughey said in the podcast. “Daily, with ourselves, with others, in life… Sometimes our differential is split or off-balance, out of rhythm, out of tune… and we do not hear the music of our own lives… What do we gotta do? We got to find our frequency, balance the EQ, get rid of the treble, bring up the bass… What I’m about to share with you are some tunes I have found my frequency too the last 50 years… All songs that got me back in line and on time, so I could find my frequency again…”

Matthew McConaughey Played a Song By Sturgill Simpson

During the podcast, McConaughey decided to play one of Simpson’s songs. He played “It Ain’t All Flowers,” which featured on Simpson’s second album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music. McConaughey prefaced the song, saying, “Time to put your seatbelt on. Bring your chin strap, and your mouthguard cause we got scars to earn in this rodeo called life.”

In mid-October, Simpson dropped his newest album Cuttin Grass – Vol. 1. The album was Simpson’s first journey into bluegrass music and featured several bluegrass renditions of his hits. Simpson developed the idea for the album during the pandemic after developing a severe case of COVID-19.

McConaughey named the podcast after a recent memoir he’s been promoting. The actor has recently opened up about his political views and being a Christian in Hollywood.
