With the upcoming release of his memoir Greenlights, Matthew McConaughey is sharing details never heard before. One of the first?

The nature in which his father, James Donald McConaughey, died. It’s a bit of a doozie.

In an excerpt from the book released by People magazine, McConaughey explains that his father died in a pretty unique situation. Heart attacks happen, but they typically don’t happen in the middle of “making love.”

“I got a call from my Mom. ‘Your dad died.’ My knees buckled. I couldn’t believe it. He was my dad. Nobody or nothing could kill him. Except mom. He’d always told me and my brothers, ‘Boys, when I go, I’m gonna be makin’ love to your mother.’ And that’s what happened. He had a heart attack when he climaxed.”

In many ways, McConaughey says it is reflective of his parents’ relationship. According to the actor, the pair were passionate, but not without their issues.

“They were, at times, violent,” McConaughey said. “As I say in the book, that is how they communicated. They were divorced twice, married three times, I mean, yeah, it was like the Pacific Ocean in a storm.”

Matthew McConaughey Talks Being A Dad Himself

Besides talking about his parents at length, McConaughey also discussed his own parental role. The father of three kids with wife Camelia, McConaughey does have his hands full.

But being busy as a parent was always what the actor wanted.

“The only thing I ever knew I wanted to be was a father,” McConaughey said. “And it’s remained the pinnacle for me. Being a dad was always my only dream… I can’t think of anything being more important.”

Further, the soon-to-be-published memoirist says the lessons from his childhood now play a factor in how he parents.

“I can tell you this: I’m happy and confident to say our kids do not question the love we have in our family.”
