“I’ve been a wrestling fan since I was eight,” McConaughey told Jimmy Kimmel.
Currently, he’s a fan of Scottish professional wrestler Drew McIntyre. The actor was spotted during an October match cheering on the wrestler (thought McIntyre lost that match). First making his debut in the late 2000s, McIntyre grew into a popular wrestler in his own right. He has held the WWE heavyweight championship twice.
But there’s one wrestler that not even McIntyre could live up to. McConaughey’s favorite wrestler of all time is Hacksaw Jim Duggan.
“Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Come out with a two by four baby,” McConaughey said. And Kimmel agreed that McIntyre should look to Hacksaw’s example when coming up with a wrestling name.
Matthew McConaughey Cheer on Hacksaw Jim Duggan
It’s easy to see why McConaughey was a fan of Duggan. The wrestler got his start back in the late 1970s. But he really didn’t grow into popularity until the late 1980s when he wrestled for the WWF. Duncan became a star during the same era that spawned wrestler’s careers like Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant.
It was considered a golden age for the sport for many fans. And Duggan excelled as Hacksaw, the American patriot. The wrestler tapped into the country’s nationalism during the 1980s. He portrayed himself as almost like a Captain America-type, only with more attitude. Among Duggan’s arsenal was his battle cry “Hooo!” and his chant of “USA.”
He also became known for his signature two-by-four, which he would beat his opponents with. Duggan perhaps took Theodore Roosevelt too literally when he said, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”
During his career, Duggan became the WWE heavyweight champion and also became the first person to win a Royal Rumble. Over the years, Duggan has made several returns to the WWE and has inspired many fans, including McConaughey. As for the actor, he’s considered taking a turn in the ring
“I’ll say not too much because as you know, you can’t say too much about these things, but it is something that interests me,” McConaughey said during the Better Together podcast
