Matthew McConaughey got his first acting role exactly how the stereotypes suggest.

There was partying. Lots of it. And someone had some pot. Given the Matthew McConaughey hazy persona, this all seems appropriate. The proud Texan and Academy Award winner talked about how he got his first acting gig during a session of the podcast Set it Straight: Myths and Legends” on Amazon,

Here’s the perfect McConaughey formula:

“In the right bar, at the right time, meet the right guy, we hang out, having quite a few pops – enough to get kicked out of said bar,” he quipped. “In a cab ride back to my house, he’s rolling up a doob, he’s dropping me off, he says, ‘Hey man, you ever done any acting?’”

Matthew McConaughey did have a somewhat unusual start to his acting career. His first role was a non-speaking one in the weekly docuseries Unsolved Mysteries. This was circa 1992. A few months later, McConaughey earned another non-speaking role, this time for the music video of up-and-coming country artist, Trisha Yearwood. McConaughey played Joe in the music video for Walkaway Joe.

Now, this all begs the question. What is Matthew McConaughey going to do next? He and his wife are raising their three children in Austin. He works at the University of Texas. And McConaughey is doing other stuff that soothes his soul — namely watching the Texas Longhorns and Austin FC.

So What Does Matthew McConaughey Do Next?

Of course, after McConaughey kept a low profile for the past few months, political folks started circling back to see how well he polls for Texas governor. Then came a survey conducted by the Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas-Tyler. The poll said McConaughey would best Gov. Greg Abbott head-to-head by nine points.

So what does Matthew McConaughey do with that information?

“I’m measuring it,” McConaughey told “Set it Straight: Myths and Legends. “Look, it’s going to be in some capacity…I just, I’m more a folksy and philosopher-poet statesman than I am a, per se, definitive politician. So I go, well that’s a reason not to, but then I go, no, that’s exactly why you should. Because politics needs redefinition, but I’m measuring ‘what is my category? What’s my embassy?’”

Here’s why you shouldn’t trust the poll a ton. McConaughey has yet to reveal a political party. although most assume he leans Democratic.

The poll was conducted Sept. 7-14. And it surveyed 1,148 registered voters. The margin of error is about 3 points. If anything, the poll shows movement in McConaughey’s direction. In the summer, Abbott led the poll. Then, you’ll have to factor in the presence of Beto O’Rourke, who likely will run for the Democratic nomination for governor. In 2018, O’Rourke nearly pulled the upset of Ted Cruz for U.S. Senate. Abbott leads O’Rourke by five points.
