Parents are famous for setting clear boundaries for their children. Actor Matthew McConaughey’s mother’s tactic may be a bit on the extreme side, however, through his mother’s firm hand, the actor learned quickly that he was named Matthew for a reason.

During an interview with “Daily Blast Live,” Matthew McConaughey explains why he always goes by Matthew. Not Matt.

“I got my first butt-whooping for answering to ‘Matt,’” the actor told Al Jackson during the interview.

There’s an Importance Behind McConaughey’s Full Name

Matthew McConaughey went a little deeper into the story during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live. During the interview, the actor remembered a moment when he was in kindergarten and a friend asked him to go play on the monkey bars.

“My buddy says ‘hey Matt, you want to go play on the monkey bars?’” the We Are Marshall star remembered. “I ran out and said, ‘yeah!’”

McConaughey told Kimmel that he was on his way to join his buddy on the monkey bars when he felt this hand on his shoulder that slammed him to the ground.

“I look up and it’s my mother in my face and she’s like ‘what are you doing,’” he recalled.

Matthew McConaughey told Kimmel that when he told his mother he was headed to the monkey bars, she said, asked him who was headed there.

“I said ‘I’m going to play the monkey bars,’” the star remembered.

“She says, ‘who is?’ I said, ‘I am,'” McConaughey continued. “She said ‘What’s your name?’ I said ‘Matthew.’”

McConaughey added that his mother was very clear as to why she was upset about the exchange between young Matthew and his friend.

“She says “Don’t you ever answer to Matt again. I named you Matthew from the Bible,’” the “Dazed and Confused” star laughed. “I was like, ‘Yes ma’am!’”

Matthew McConaughey’s Mom Named Him Matthew, NOT Matt

During the interview featured in the Daily Blast Tweet, the actor explained that even today, his mom would insist her son be called Matthew rather than Matt.

“She’ll come over here at 90 years old and say, ‘what you answer to? I named you Matthew for a reason, boy!’”

Since those days, Matthew McConaughey has established himself as a “rom-com” favorite as well as an established Hollywood star.

From films such as “Dazed and Confused,” the actor’s first major feature, to Martin Scorcese’s hit “The Wolf of Wallstreet,” McConaughey’s talent spans a wide range of abilities.

The award-winning actor added “television star” to his portfolio when he starred opposite Woody Harelson on the first season of HBO’s “True Detective.”

Most recently, McConaughey lent his voice to the upcoming film “Sing 2” as the show-biz loving Buster Moon.
