The past few weeks have been filled with gradual tidbits of information regarding Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry.
The two left the royal family in January 2020. Since their departure, the two have been dealing with lawsuits, Netflix and Spotify deals, their son Archie, as well as gradually increasing royal issues. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding their rocky relationship with the royal family over the years.
All of this has reached a peak when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down with Oprah Winfrey for an interview. That interview has crazy high ratings and millions of viewers so far.
Meghan Markle Interview Boasts High Ratings
Last night (March 7), Markle, Prince Harry, and Winfrey all sat down together. Millions of avid viewers were tuned in on their screens around the world, to listen to the exclusive, tell-all interview.
According to TV Line, the two-hour interview had more than 17 million people tuning in. It also had a 2.6 demo rating. This doesn’t include the millions now watching the interview or clips of it the next day. The interview had triple the number of viewers compared to the Golden Globes the week before.
It had the largest primetime audience for an entertainment special since the Academy Awards in 2020.
To illustrate just how large the viewership is, the show “Equalizer” had the second-most with 5.7 million viewers. “American Idol” had 5.2 million viewers and a 0.8 demo rating.
Several moments from the interview are particularly gathering attention. Many viewers continued the conversation via social media.
Meghan Markle Spills Royal Details to Oprah Winfrey in Interview
In one heartbreaking moment, Markle said that she reached a point in the palace where she thought about suicide. This comment alone sums up just how polarizing her time at the palace felt.
“I didn’t want to be alive anymore … was ashamed to admit it to Harry, but I knew if I didn’t say it, I would do it. I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. It was clear, it was real, it was frightening, and it was a constant thought,” Markle admitted.
Markle also could not receive the proper help during this difficult and ongoing time. Due to regulating the royal family’s image, it would not have looked good for her to check into a hospital. Both her and Harry revealed they felt “trapped” during their time in the palace.
Another one of Markle’s comments during the interview had to do with her son, Archie.
“In those months when I was pregnant, and at the same time there was talk about no title, no security, and also conversations about how dark his skin might be when born,” Markle said.
Winfrey asked who had those concerns, but Markle refused to share any names, in fear of damaging reputations.
The pair are now pregnant with their second child, revealing during the interview that the baby will be a little girl. The topic of the future name of the baby, due in Summer 2021, also drew mass attention. Of course, many social media users expect the child to be named after Harry’s mother, Diana.
The topics, from moving to Canada to mangled family relationships, drew world-wide attention, as they seemingly shed light on issues of the monarchy.
The interview is really years and years in the making and covers a lot of tabloid mishaps. This is likely why so many people flocked to their screens to watch Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Oprah Winfrey lay it all out.
