‘Mel Gibson Day’ Declared in North Carolina City

Southport North Carolina Mayor Joseph P. Hatem hereby declares Dec. 16, 2021 as “Mel Gibson Day.”

Residents of Southport have noticed Gibson relaxing around their tiny coastal town a lot lately. The actor is currently on-site filming his upcoming movie Boys of Summer, and Gibson has taken a liking to the local culture.

As Port City Daily reported, Mel Gibson enjoys dining at Castucci’s Italian Restaurant and staying fit at Cape Fear Fitness. And he’s been exploring all of the town’s small businesses and cultural spots on his days off.

So to thank the Daddy’s Home star for bringing some life to sleepy Southport, the mayor presented him with a key to the city.

“Mr. Gibson, just to be in the same room with you is an extraordinary honor for me,” Mayor Hatem said in a video. “I’m very happy Hollywood has returned to North Carolina. We thank you for being an important part of that successful return. We have not seen this much excitement in Southport since the filming of ‘Safe Haven.’”

Quite a few blockbuster hits have been filmed in Southport North Carolina. Some examples include Weekend at Bernies, I Know what you Did Last Summer, and Domestic Disturbance. But the last time Hollywood shipped production crews to the areas was in 2012 for Safe Haven.

The movie, which was based on a Nicolas Sparks bestseller, brought a lot of attention to Southport. To this day, fans still visit tour sites from the film, including Moore Street Market, Fishy Fishy Café, and American Fish Company.

Mel Gibson Will Star in and Direct ‘Lethal Weapon 5’

Thanks to Mel Gibson, Lethal Weapon is getting a brand new installment.

Last month, the Oscar winner shocked fans when he announced his plans to bring Lethal Weapon 5 to the big screen. According to The Sun, Gibson will start production sometime next year.

The late Richard Donner produced and directed all four of the previous franchise films. Over the summer, he began working on Lethal Weapon 5. And shortly before his passing, Donner called Gibson to ask for some insurance.

“(Donner) was developing the screenplay, and he got pretty far along with it,” Gibson explained at a London film event in November. “And he said to me one day, ‘listen, kid, if I kick the bucket you will do it.’ And I said, ‘Shut up.’ But he did indeed pass away. But he did ask me to do it, and at the time I didn’t say anything. He said it to his wife, and the studio, and the producer. So I will be directing the fifth one.”

A source close to Mel Gibson told the sun that Gibson will reprise his role as Martin Riggs. However, it is unclear if Danny Glover star in the film.
