Mel Gibson will star in a new John Wick prequel television series that will focus on the hotel for assassins. The three-night special will air on Starz. Producers haven’t announced a release date.

Mel Gibson will star as Cormac, a crime boss embroiled in a war for dominance in 1975 New York City. The specials will include several nods to the popular John Wick franchise. Though producers don’t expect Keanu Reeves will appear in the series, Deadline reported.

The Continental will follow a young Winston Scott, played by Ian McShane in the John Wick franchise. Winston Scott runs the Continental, a hotel for hitmen and murderers. McShane said in April that he doesn’t want to appear in the Starz series, but he may narrate them.

“What we’re exploring in The Continental is the young Winston and how it came to be that he and his team of confederates found their way into this hotel which we have met for the first time in the movie franchise 40 years later,” Lionsgate TV’s Kevin Beggs told Deadline. “That’s the arena. I won’t give away more than that, but Starz really leaned into this take also, and they have been great collaborators. And how we’ve approached this first season is as three essentially 90-minute events which you could construe as a limited series or a limited event series.”

Lionsgate TV said each episode will cost as much as $20 million to produce. This is the first time Mel Gibson has returned to television since the 2004-2005 comedy Complete Savages, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Keanu Reaves is hard at work filming the latest in the series, John Wick: Chapter 4, in Germany, France, and Japan.

‘John Wick 4’ Boasts Big New Cast, Returning Characters

The John Wick series began as a story about a retired hitman out for vengeance for the murder of his puppy. But producers upped the stakes and budget with each sequel. John Wick: Chapter 4 is the most ambitious one yet, reports said. It will hit theaters in May 2022.

Lance Reddick and Ian McShane will return to the series as the concierge and owner respectively of The Continental.

“I couldn’t be happier than to welcome Ian McShane back to John Wick: Chapter 4,” Director Chad Stahelski said. “He is not only an amazing actor but is an indispensable collaborator who has helped define the world of John Wick.

Clancy Brown, best known for Shawshank Redemption and countless other movies, will star opposite Reeves.

Martial arts master Donnie Yen, who starred in several martial arts movies as well as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will join the cast as one of John Wick’s old friends.

“Donnie Yen will bring a vibrant and powerful energy to the franchise,” producer Basil Iwanyk told Deadline. “We were determined to bring him on board to John Wick 4 and are thrilled for the opportunity to have such a major talent to collaborate with Keanu.”

Hiroyuki Sanada, Rina Sawayama, and Shamier Anderson will also appear in the film.
