Michael J Fox had no idea Back to the Future would become a classic film.
He opened up on The Late, Late Show with James Corden that he was so tired during the filming he didn’t think much about it at all.
Corden, who is a big fan of Back to the Future, asked Fox what he remembered from the filming of the movie. Not much, apparently. The actor spent his days shooting the TV show Family Ties and would film scenes from the movie at night. It was a hectic and exhausting schedule that left him with little to no energy or memory, he said.
“I had no idea what my name was (during filming),” he joked.
Though he does recall how impressed he was with the cast and crew. He would sometimes sit back and get lost in the moment.
“I’d go to do a scene with another actor … and I’d think how’d I get here? How did this happen?,” he asked.
Michael J Fox Returns as Marty McFly One More Time
While Fox says he’s retired from acting, he still reprised his role as Marty McFly earlier this month for a Lil Nas X teaser trailer for a new holiday song. The Old Town Road singer reached out and asked if he’d be interested in being in the video. Fox said his kids gave him no choice.
“My kids are adults but they were like ‘you have to do this,'” he told Corden. “‘If you do nothing else this year, you do this.'”
In the video, Fox as McFly is back in Wild West like he was in Back to the Future III. He has some advice for the rapper.
“Whatever you do, Nas, don’t go to 2020,” he says before running his fingers across the brim of his Stetson.
But don’t expect him to put on the leather-sleeved jacket or ride the hoverboard again. Fox revealed in his new book No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality that he was retiring from acting for a second time. Fox, who has Parkinson’s disease, cited declining health as the reason.
“There is a time for everything, and my time of putting in a 12-hour workday, and memorizing seven pages of dialogue, is best behind me,” the 59-year-old said in the book, according to the New York Post.
“At least for now … I enter a second retirement. That could change, because everything changes. But if this is the end of my acting career, so be it.”
