Mike Rowe is a man who loves to share people’s unique stories with the world. He did it as the host of the television series “Dirty Jobs” and he did it as the host of “Somebody’s Gotta Do It.”
During a recent interview on “Your Morning” with Spectrum News 1, Rowe talked about the common thread that tied both of those series together. As the newscaster points out, “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” highlights the passion and purpose with which those who are featured on the show live their lives. It is passion and purpose that connect this show to his other popular series, “Dirty Jobs,” according to Mike Rowe.
“Well, those two themes were both central to ‘Dirty Jobs,’ which kind of put me on the map years ago,” Mike Rowe said of passion and purpose.
The popular television personality described the people who appeared on “Dirty Jobs” as “dirty jobbers.”
“(They) were people who did the kinds of jobs that most people didn’t want to do – critical jobs that make civilized life possible, Mike Rowe said.
There was an important lesson and a surprise to be gained from his “Dirty Jobs” television series.
“But the big lesson from that show and the surprise were that so many of those people that we featured really loved what they did – they did have a passion for it,” Mike Rowe said. “And the fact that most, most other people couldn’t see that or didn’t know that, I just thought it was interesting.”
Mike Rowe Series ‘Somebody’s Gotta Do It’ Focuses on What People Do Outside of Their Jobs
While “Dirty Jobs” focused on what people do as their job, “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” focused more on what people do for fun away from work.
“So, ‘Somebody’s Gotta Do It’ is more of a rumination on avocation instead of vocation,” Mike Rowe said. “But, it’s still the same type of person. The kind of person who just knows they can make a better mousetrap. (The kind of person) who believes they’ve only got the one life. And are committed to do everything they can with it.”
Rowe also described the people who appear in “Somebody’s Gotta Do It” as those “who wake up agitated.”
They do so, he said, “because the world’s not quite the way they think it ought to be.”
What makes them stand apart is that they make the choice to “to something about it,” according to Rowe. The people on this show, he said, are “entrepreneurs,” “bloody do-gooders,” and those “whose hobbies got out of control.”
“… it’s people … who live life with a certain kind of zest and passion,” Mike Rowe also said. “Not because they want to, because they got to.”
