Fans were concerned for Mike Tyson after a bizarre interview on “Good Morning Britain” where he slurred his speech and seemed vacant, but he said he was just tired. The boxing legend appeared on the talk show Tuesday to promote his Nov. 28 comeback fight with Roy Jones Jr.
Tyson tweeted about the interview after clips of him appearing distracted and at times confused during the interview with hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid went viral, the Daily Mail reported.
“Hey mate @piersmorgan and UK. I tried to stay up late for interview but fell asleep and like a lion I’m hard to wake once asleep. Training hard and going to bed early. I had no monitor so I couldn’t see you guys and forgot to look into camera.,” he tweeted to his 5.5 million followers.
Morgan chalked up Tyson’s behavior to the time difference. Los Angeles, where Tyson lives, is 8 hours behind London where the show is filmed.
Fans worried for Mike Tyson ahead of fight
The former heavyweight champ’s health was already at issue as he plans to re-enter the ring at 54 years old. Jones is 51.
“There have been concerns as you are two men in your 50s fighting each other without protective headgear,” Reid asked Tyson, acocording to the Daily Mail. “What do you think about those concerns?”
Tyson brushed off the fears, adding that it was actually a good thing the two are squaring off.
“I think it’s very wonderful that we are fighting together,” Tyson said. “It’s a fight we should have had sooner, but unfortunately we are having it now, and that’s going to be awesome.”
But his behavior during the interview undercut his nonchalant attitude about his safety. Fans tweeted their concerns for Tyson after it aired.
Tyson will take on Jones on Nov. 28 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.
