Singer Miley Cyrus is known for covering the songs of musicians that she loves and is inspired by, but the artist is taking that inspiration to a new level with the announcement of a full album of covers by heavy metal group Metallica.

The former Hannah Montana star sat down with Interview magazine and confirmed the Metallica cover album. However, she did not release any information on which of the band’s songs she selected for the tribute.

“We’ve been working on a Metallica cover album and I’m here working on that,” Cyrus said to fashion designer Rick Owens in the interview. “We’re so lucky to be able to continue to work on our art during all of this. At first, it felt uninspiring and now I’ve been totally ignited.”

Cyrus Has Covered Metallica and More in the Past

Cyrus has treated her fans to numerous covers over the years. Some of the performances include renditions of songs by Pearl Jam, Blondie, The Cranberries, and the late Tom Petty.

The singer’s musical taste is wide-ranging and wants her albums to be “reflective” of that. Cyrus says everyone from “Britney Spears to Metallica” inspires her when referencing her eclectic taste in music.

“In my sets, I cover Britney Spears to Metallica,” Cyrus explains. “So my record will be reflective of who I am, which is just kind of all different pieces of inspiration and influence.”

Cyrus’ appreciation of Metallica is not new since she has covered the band’s music live in previous years. Therefore it is not shocking she is dedicating an entire album to the heavy metal legends. In fact, Cyrus has covered songs from the band’s most critically acclaimed Black album as recently as last year.

In June 2019, Cyrus took the stage at the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England, which is one of the largest festivals in the world. During her set, she belted out a cover of Metallica’s hit song “Nothing Else Matters.” The song gives fans an idea of what’s to come on her new Metallica tribute album.

The Metallica project follows her 2019 EP She Is Coming, and would be Cyrus’ first full-length album since 2017’s Younger Now. Earlier this month, Cyrus featured on her godmother Dolly Parton’s new album A Holly Dolly Christmas which released Oct. 2. Furthermore, the singer announced in June that she’s been sober for six months.
