2021 CMA Awards: Thomas Rhett’s Night Was Made Meeting Freddie Freeman

by Jacklyn Krol

Thomas Rhett got to be a fan for a change!

On Wednesday, November 10 at the 2021 CMA Awards at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, Rhett got the chance to meet one of his favorite baseball players. He met up with Freddie Freeman backstage at the ceremony. Freeman was there to present an award during the telecast.

“Night made and it ain’t even started @freddiefreeman @braves,” he captioned the photo.

Freeman also reposted the photo to his Instagram Stories. The World Series winner also got the chance to meet and take a photo with Luke Combs.

Thomas Rhett had quite the special date for the CMA Awards red carpet, his mother, Paige Lankford. His wife Lauren Akins is pregnant with their fourth daughter. They are the parents to Lennon Love, Ada James, and Willa Gray. However, this pregnancy is “probably one of the worst for her as far as nausea and yakking all day.”

“Literally, I’m just waiting on a phone call,” he told Entertainment Tonight of the possibility of his wife going into labor at any moment. “It literally could happen tonight, it could happen tomorrow, who knows? So we’re just gonna keep going until we have to go to the hospital.”

Thomas Rhett previously revealed that this has been a “rough” pregnancy.

“I’m sure there’s a lot of moms out there that feel that way. But when Lauren gets pregnant, the whole getting sick first trimester and then you’re done just has never really applied to her,” he told People. “It’s just really sad because I feel like I can’t do anything to help, except order Taco Bell at 11:30 at night to put something in her stomach.”

Although it has been difficult, Lauren has been “such a trooper.”

Thomas Rhett’s 2021 CMA Awards Shoutout

Thomas Rhett performed his hit single and album title song, “Country Again” during the telecast. The best part? He was about to give a shoutout to fellow performer and nominee, Eric Church.

He sings in the song, “But last night we cracked some cold beers / And cranked Eric Church to ten / Thought, “Man, it feels good to be country again.”

The performance began similar to how he performed it on his Country Again Tour. It was stripped back with just a guitar and Rhett’s vocals. It then progressed into a full band jam and production. It really felt like you were at a Thomas Rhett concert.

“We’re gonna try to replicate what we did live this summer on the CMA stage which will be super fun,” Rhett said in an interview. “I can’t wait to point right at Eric Church when I drop his line in the song. Hopefully, he gives me a thumbs up. I’m just really excited about it.”
