5 Country Songs for Your Halloween Playlist

Having a whole list of horror movies to watch on the spookiest day of the year is nice and all. However, some of us don’t have time for all that. You might be hosting a party or driving the kiddos to the good neighborhoods where they give the best candy. If so, you might have to settle for a Halloween playlist. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered there, too. Here are five songs to get your list of spooky songs started.

“The Ride” by David Allen Coe: A Must for Any Halloween Playlist

If you’re a country fan and you’re building a Halloween playlist, this is probably already on it. If not, it should be. “The Ride” is a story about getting a ride from the ghost of Hank Williams. The song itself is spooky, but its origin is even spookier. Gary Gentry allegedly wrote the song with the assistance of Hank Williams’ ghost. Knowing that makes the song feel a little eerier.

“Midnight in Montgomery” by Alan Jackson

The ghost of Hank Williams strikes again! This time, though he’s watching over Alan Jackson as the then-up-and-comer visits the late legend’s grave. This is another song that is perfect for any country music Halloween playlist.  “Midnight in Montgomery” is loosely based on true events. Early in his career, Alan Jackson was doing a radio station tour. During his travels, he found himself staying in Montgomery, Alabama overnight. As a late-night storm settled over the city, Jackson walked to Oakwood Cemetery Annex to pay his respects to Hank. As he knelt beside the legend’s final resting place, the feeling in the air changed. It felt like he was being watched by unseen eyes. That moment inspired Jackson to write the song.

“Dig Gravedigger Dig” by Corb Lund

Let’s dig a little deeper and put some relatively deep cuts on the Halloween playlist. This Corb Lund track is a great addition. What’s spookier than graveyards? Not much of anything, really. The lyrics tell the story of a gravedigger who really loves his job. Corb hints at something sinister here, but overall it’s a fun and spooky track that’s killer 365 days a year but perfect for Halloween.

“Ouija” by Harley Poe

If you’re hosting a Halloween party, this song needs to be on the playlist. It’s about a partygoer who gets bored with the usual activities. As a result, they break out the ol’ Talking Board and invite a roaming spirit to enter their body. Much like the holiday, it’s dark, it’s spooky, and it’s a whole lot of fun.

“(Ghost) Riders in the Sky” by Johnny Cash

Every country playlist should have some Johnny Cash on it. “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky” is a classic. On top of that, it has everything you could possibly want from a country playlist for Halloween. The video above features Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson trading vocals. The lyrics contain ghosts, cowboys, ghostly cowboys, threats of hell, and demonic cows. What else could you want? It’s damn near perfect.

Whatever you’re listening to this Halloween, crank it up loud, have fun, and be safe.
