ACM Awards: Why the 2022 Edition of Award Show is Reportedly Moving Away from CBS

by Jacklyn Krol

The 2022 ACM Awards has a new exclusive platform.

On Thursday, August 19, the Academy of Country Music announced its show’s new home. The upcoming awards show will be solely streamed on Amazon Prime Video. This marks the first time that an awards show will be streaming on the platform.

What Made the ACM Awards Shift?

According to The Wrap, this major change came from contract negotiations. CBS previously aired the show between 1998 and 2020. The network apparently didn’t counteroffer Dick Clark Production’s $22 million demand to renew their deal. Sources told the outlet that the price was previously $20 million. It was important to note that the ACM Awards lost almost half of its viewership in the last two years.

Similar to other award shows, the ACMs saw a steep decline to only 6.3 million viewers this past year. But the lower viewership began in 2019.

During the 2018, 2019, and 2020 ACMs, they earned roughly $15.5 million in advertising revenue per show. This means that CBS would have lost money from their licensing fee of $4.5 million more. To compare the contrast of award shows, the 2020 Oscars had $129 million in ad revenue for ABC.

All About the Show

According to the news release, the show will “bring together iconic artists for exciting collaborations, surprising moments, and an unprecedented number of world television-premiere performances.”

“This historic partnership with ACM, MRC, and Amazon Prime Video meets the industry’s need to bring awards shows to the forefront of the streaming world—exactly where fans are consuming and demanding content,” said

Ed Warm, the outgoing ACM Board of Directors Chair, said that this is a “historic partnership.” Their goal is to bring award shows “to the forefront of the streaming world.”

“It will also deliver invaluable new opportunities for country artists, enabling them to reach larger audiences and presenting them the Academy’s exceptionally entertaining and compelling show,” he added.

This will mark the first major awards show to be live-streamed on the platform. No other major awards show has solely been on a streaming platform. In recent years, other award shows have been simulcast on streaming platforms but none haven’t been exempt from cable television.

“This partnership, which reinforces our position as an innovative, progressive awards show, will deliver the broadest possible audience and, simultaneously, deliver massive value to our artists whose music lives inside this ecosystem, enabling fans to discover and stream music as they watch,” said CEO of the Academy of Country Music, Damon Whiteside.

The ACM Awards have been around since 1966. It is the longest-running country music awards show in history.

The Academy of Country Music noted that the exact date, location, host, and details will be revealed at a later date.
