Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney may be busy performing at awards shows, but they are masking up and taking precautions nonetheless.
Dan + Shay Mask Up
“On the way to @AMAs,” the pop-country duo tweeted Sunday. “Nominated for 3 awards and performing ISPGTB tonight. wish us luck!”
At the 2020 CMA Awards, Dan + Shay were joined Justin Bieber to perform “10,000 Hours,” the lead single from the duo’s upcoming album, to an empty Hollywood Bowl in L.A. The song later won Single of the Year, Billboard reported.
The pair are also putting in an appearance on “CMA Country Christmas,” which airs Nov. 30 on ABC.
CMA Awards Drew Some Controversy
The CMA Awards mostly took place in person in Nashville at Music City Center. The show drew some backlash after it aired for the images of maskless musicians at the convention center, failing to social distance.
“A few stars held strange face shields meant to cover their mouths, which, according to the FDA, do not [count] as PPE,” Popsugar pointed out.
CMA CEO Sarah Trahern told the Tennessean that they were trying to bring people together in the midst of the pandemic. That’s despite Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines that classify “large in-person gatherings where it is difficult [to keep] 6 feet apart and attendees travel from outside the local area” as the highest risk.
“It’s going to be a little different, but I actually am so excited about the fact that all of the awards are going to be live,” Trahern said. “And the people have that experience of being together, and celebrating the best of music, in a year that certainly wasn’t normal for any of us.”
By masking up and sharing the image on social media, Dan + Shay aren’t just protecting themselves. They’re also reminding their fans that it’s still 2020, and things aren’t back to normal yet.
