Ashley Monroe Updates Fans on Health Following Cancer Diagnosis, Announces New ‘Covers’ Project

Back in mid-July, Ashley Monroe informed her fans that she had a rare form of blood cancer called Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia. The disease, which is a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, caused Monroe to be constantly anemic. However, she is currently getting treatment and staying hopeful for the future.

Ashely Monroe told Rolling Stone that she has gone through two rounds of chemotherapy. “Each cycle is back-to-back, once a month. It’s hard, I’ll be honest. It doesn’t feel good the day of and the week after, but I feel like I’ve bounced back a little quicker this time than my first time,” she said of her current treatment. Monroe added that her strong support system and their prayers are helping her through the disease and treatment.

Ashely Monroe said that it’s something she’s going to have to get used to. There is no cure for the type of cancer that she has. However, it can be managed with chemo and other medications. She told the publication that her current course of treatment will “Keep it at bay for a while.”

Right now, though, the cancer isn’t Ashley Monroe’s biggest worry. The chemotherapy depletes her immune system. As a result, sickness and infection are her biggest concerns. “That’s what I’ve been told: just don’t get sick,” she said of her doctors’ advice. This worry is increased due to the pandemic. So, Monroe has been staying at home and away from people.

Luckily, Ashley Monroe was already an introvert. So, staying home and away from crowds hasn’t been a huge change for her. She says the biggest adjustment she has had to make was the “overall acceptance and surrender of control that it turns out I probably very much needed anyway.”

Ashley Monroe’s Cover Album

Ashley Monroe’s latest release is called The Covers contains five cover songs. She cut “Don’t Worry Baby,” by the Beach Boys, “Every Breath You Take,” by the Police, “More Than Words,” by Extreme, “Everything I do,” by Bryan Adams, and “Love Hurts,” popularized by Nazareth.

Ashley Monroe worked with Tyler Cain to put together the collection of cover songs. Cain and Monroe have been friends and collaborators for years. Before they started working on the project together, he told Monroe that he had a studio and wanted her to “Come bring some good vibes.”

About the aptly titled project, Ashley Monroe said, “I wanted to record some of my favorite songs that if we were having a bonfire back in the day, if we were having a party, this is the song I would pull out my guitar and sing.”

The Covers is available right now on your streaming platform of choice. The EP clocks in at just over 18 minutes. So, if you’re looking for a soundtrack to your lunch break, Ashley Monroe has you covered.
