Billy Ray Cyrus Goes Bluegrass in New Tune ‘Roll That Rock’ Featuring His Cousin Bobby

Billy Ray Cyrus is bringing rock and roll to bluegrass!

The “Achy Breaky Heart” hitmaker collaborated with his cousin Bobby on his latest release, “Roll That Rock.” The new track was announced via People on August 12. The song will officially release on Friday, August 13. The music video will premiere the same day on CMT.

This song is truly a family affair. Billy Ray and Bobby co-wrote the tune together and recorded it alongside Bobby’s wife, Teddi Cyrus. This marks Billy Ray Cyrus’ first Bluegrass release. The track features a fiddle and banjos and references his Christian beliefs.

“I always prayed for purpose through the music. Started a band for that reason,” Billy Ray told the outlet. “When I started singing ‘Roll That Rock’ my inner spirit said Bobby Cyrus will know exactly what to do with this. He did.”

“It became a collaboration of my wife Teddi Cyrus’ powerful vocals, Billy Ray’s undeniable sound and me,” Bobby added.

Teddi feels “thankful and humble” to collaborate with her husband and brother-in-law. “This song is powerful and will move your soul,” she assured.

The trio will be giving the song’s debut performance on release day at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.

The couple teased their appearance on Twitter. They revealed that they will be performing at the historic venue for the first time ever.

The singing couple/duo signed to Pinecastle Records in 2020 and recently released their collaborative single, “My Wedding Day.” The newly-formed pair also released their debut self-titled album in April. Their genre teeters on the lines of bluegrass, gospel, and country.

Billy Ray Cyrus on Genres

Billy Ray Cyrus’ thirteenth studio album, Change My Mind, debuted in 2012. Prior to the album’s release, he spoke with Taste of Country, where he confirmed that Bluegrass does influence his music.

“It’s got a little bit of everything on there. It’s certainly a tip of the hat to my roots and influences, from bluegrass to outlaw country to southern rock ‘n’ roll. We had the right songs with the right band at the right time. Everything just came together to make a really special record,” he said.

Billy Ray Cyrus is no stranger to crossing genres although his home and start was in country music. He recorded “Old Town Road” with Lil Nas X back in 2019 after charts wanted to exclude the song since Nas’ tune features different genres. The crossover worked and the unlikely pair broke all of the records for 17 weeks at the No. 1 spot. The duo also secured a slew of awards from music award shows that covered country as well as all genres.

Most recently, Billy Ray Cyrus recorded a song with Australian artist FIREROSE entitled “New Day”. The pop-electronic-country fused hybrid was a new departure for Cyrus, who was a welcomed addition to the track.
