Over the past year or so, we have said goodbye to some incredible artists from the country music world. Unfortunately, today we receive more bad news from B.J. Thomas, the country and Christian music icon. He released a statement through his publicist earlier today revealing that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

“I just wanted to take this unique opportunity to share my gratitude to Gloria, my wonderful wife, and my rock for over 53 years, my family, friends, and fans,” B.J. Thomas said in his statement. “I’m so blessed to have had the opportunity to record and perform beautiful songs in pop, country, and gospel music, and to share those wonderful songs and memories around the world with millions of you. I ask all of you for your prayers during this time and that my music can live on with you.”

B.J. Thomas’s music has had a lasting impact on so many Americans of all ages. With that in mind, it is safe to say that his music will live on through us. For example, the songs “Hooked on a Feeling” and “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” certainly don’t seem like they will go away anytime soon.

As for Thomas himself, he has not released any details or any timeline of the diagnosis. However, we do know that he currently remains at a health care facility in Texas and will undergo treatment. BJ Thomas still hopes for a full recovery.

Highlights from the Legendary Career of BJ Thomas

B.J. Thomas has offered the world some incredible work over the past half-century. As he points out in his statement, he and his wife Gloria Richardson have planted their feet in the industry for the better part of fifty-five years. Ever since his first album I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, which featured a cover of Hank Williams’ legendary song, came out in 1966. That particular cover sold over one million copies.

B.J. Thomas also managed to sell a million copies of the songs “Hooked on a Feeling” and “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” from 1968 and 1969, respectively. For all three of these songs, Thomas was awarded a golden record. While those three early songs earned Thomas most of his success, the music legend continued to release great Christian, country, and pop music throughout the rest of his career. Despite his tragic diagnosis, we send B.J. Thomas our thoughts and prayers for his full recovery.
