Country superstar, Blake Shelton, shared a photo of a billboard promoting his latest single, Minimum Wage.
While visiting Toronto, Canada, Shelton came across a Billboard advertising his new song. The country star snapped a photo of the billboard and shared it on Twitter.
Along with the photo of the billboard, Shelton writes “Toronto is looking good!!!! Thanks for this.”
Blake Shelton’s New Song Sparks Controversy
With record-high unemployment rates and nation-wide economic distress, some people called Shelton’s new single, “tone deaf” to the country’s current situation. One follower wrote “Does anyone else find Blake Shelton’s “Minimum Wage” song to be incredibly tone-deaf to our country’s current state?”
However, after receiving multiple replies from people backing the song, the user followed up with another Tweet. He said, “Appreciate everyone sharing their opinion! I’m certainly willing to hear differing points of view on the song. When I heard it for the first time on NYE, it just rubbed me the wrong way. But I’m really stoked that a lot of you like it and find happiness in the tune!”
Shelton Responds To ‘Minimum Wage’ Backlash
During an interview, Shelton commented on the controversy surrounding the song. He defended his song first by pointing out that he, just like many artists starting out, struggled for a long time before hitting it big. He shared that he had moments when he had to decide between paying his rent or his electric bill.
“But those really were some of the best days of my life that I still think about all the time. And I think about all the jobs and things that I did over the years, just so I could play music for free somewhere,” says Shelton.
As for criticism, Shelton says, that the people who criticize the song are simply looking for something to be upset about.
“No matter what your intention is, no matter what the truth is, they want it to be something that they can be upset about so that they can get on social media and try to grab a headline,” says Shelton.
Despite the criticism, Shelton says that he is going to continue to release music that resonates with him, and he’s not going to worry about the Blake Shelton haters.
“So I’m going to put out the records that resonate with me and my life and not look back,” says Shelton.
