Country star Blake Shelton had a hilariously self-deprecating take on then-and-now comparisons of “The Voice” seasons.
Shelton and his fellow “The Voice” coaches sat down with the “Today” show recently to chat about what audiences can look forward to in Season 21 of “The Voice.” They covered everything from new coach Ariana Grande to old pros Shelton and host Carson Daly.
“When you look back on the show, how do you think we’ve gotten better through the years?” Daly asked Shelton.
“Well, first of all, when you look at pictures of me and you, we haven’t gotten better,” Shelton joked.
Blake Shelton and Fellow Coaches All Get Along
Shelton went on to say that “The Voice” is not as harsh as some competition shows. They’re there to coach contestants, not to judge people, he said.
“At the end of the day, I think people still keep coming back because it’s artists working with artists and we’re not judging people,” Shelton said. “We’re just trying to help them be the best they can be.”
Shelton usually heckles newcomers to the coach’s chair, but not so much Grande. That’s because the two of them were able to team up to playfully poke fun at fellow coach and talk show host Kelly Clarkson.
“Our bond has been that we both make fun of Kelly,” Shelton said.
But good-natured kidding aside, the coaches all seem to get along swimmingly this season. They were united in their admiration of Grande, with Clarkson saying she’s even funnier when the cameras stop rolling.
“She’s got this incredible talent with not just her tone but her range,” Clarkson added of Grande’s voice. “Then also experience. She’s been doing it forever, since she was a kid. That’s an amazing amount of experience to be able to bestow upon your artists that you’re working with.”
Shelton Celebrates 20 Years in the Music Industry
Meanwhile, Blake Shelton is no slouch himself when it comes to experience. The country star recently celebrated his 20-year anniversary in the music industry.
Shelton’s debut album came out on July 31, 2001. He went on to produce nearly a dozen gold and platinum-certified albums and 36 Top 10 singles on Billboard’s country airplay chart, 28 of those No. 1 hits.
The country star’s latest album, Body Language, dropped on May 21. It was his 12th studio album to date. And Shelton’s fans absolutely loved it. They helped propel the album to a No. 3 debut on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.
Now hopefully Shelton can take all that experience and success and channel it into his coaching on “The Voice.” At least, that’s what the contestants and the audience will be looking for in Season 21.
