Blake Shelton Opens Up About Luke Combs Rejection From ‘The Voice’

Apparently, Luke Combs just didn’t have that right voice.

Back when Combs was in college he auditioned for “The Voice” during spring break when the show was auditioning in Atlanta, Georgia and was turned down.

Getting Turned Down

During his audition round, he was the only guy and he got about thirty seconds to sing. He made it to the next round that was at a studio and then made it to the next cut. He made it all the way up until the producers turned him down.

“I made it through those rounds with the producers, but I got a letter saying I wasn’t ‘interesting enough’ for the show’s ratings so I didn’t get to the show,” Combs said during his interview with Whiskey Riff.

While Combs made it through a decent amount of auditioning, he didn’t fit “The Voice” live TV quota.

“Hey, you’re a great singer but there’s no story. Which is probably true at the time I was just a college kid that was it. That was my story at that time. I’m thankful for that because it sent me on a different path,” Combs said.

Blake Shelton Responds

Current judge on “The Voice” and country music star Blake Shelton responded to Combs past rejection.

“Luke told me that he kept his rejection letter, his letter telling him he wasn’t going to be on the show. He said he put that in his dorm room in college and he hung it on the wall to push him on, something to fight for,” Shelton said.

A once ordinary college student living in a small dorm room trying to make it in music, to now one of the newest up-and-coming country artists.

“If he still has that letter … I think he should frame it and put it next to his first triple-platinum record that he has,” Shelton said.

Combs’ Success in Country

Fast-forward to right now and he is what the New York Times calls, “the most promising and influential new country star of the last five years.”

He has won ACM, CMA, CMT and Billboard Music awards. His newest album released in October “What You See Ain’t Always What You Get” is a global No.1 record.

Last night was the CMAs and Luke Combs also won the Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year.

Instead of using “The Voice” as his platform to fame, he used his songwriting talent to produce radio-ready songs and then sang them locally.

“He scraped together enough cash to record two EPs and posted performance videos to Facebook and Vine. He racked up thousands of followers and began playing every bar in the area, sometimes with a crowd of a few hundred,” according to The Washington Post.

This is how he eventually got the attention of a booking agent and a manager with his EP “Hurricane.”

Despite being rejected by “The Voice,” Luke Combs found another way, that many newcomer country artists may find inspiring, to have his voice be hear.
