Blake Shelton Wrote Gwen Stefani a Song Called ‘Reach the Star’ Instead of Reciting Wedding Vows

by Jennifer Shea

When their friend Carson Daly urged him and his fiancée to write their own vows, country superstar Blake Shelton must have known he’d have a hard act to follow. After all, his then-fiancée, pop superstar Gwen Stefani, is as sweet as they come, so she’d be sure to write something heartfelt and poignant.

And that’s just what she did, according to Daly, who recently regaled the “Today” show with an account of the couple’s private nuptials. Daly officiated the July 3 event on Shelton’s ranch in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. And he said Stefani had the whole place tearing up with her vows.

“At the wedding, Gwen starts, and she wrote this, ‘Since I was a little girl…’ And she crushes, not a dry eye in the church… It was so perfect,” Daly recounted. “I said to Blake when she was done, ‘Top that, buddy.’”

But Blake Shelton had a surprise up his sleeve. The next thing Daly knew, Shelton was holding a guitar. Then a stool appeared.

“Blake starts by saying, ‘Gwen’s always giving me a hard time about not writing enough songs, so I wrote a song,’” Daly said. “He wrote her a song, he sings her a song while he’s crying that he wrote specifically for her… Not a dry eye in the house.”

Daly believes the song, titled “Reach the Star,” could really resonate with people should Shelton decide to record it and release it as a single.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani Wed in Small Ceremony

With about 40 friends and family members present, Shelton and Stefani said their vows in the chapel Shelton built just for their wedding on the grounds of his Tishomingo ranch.

Daly said they’d been working on the wedding for months to get it just right. But in the end, it all came together beautifully.

“It was as elegant and refined and cool as Gwen is, and it was as country and down-home and fun as Blake is,” Daly explained. “They just work. They’re an unlikely pair. You know, they’re like if you paired delicious fried chicken with a glass of champagne. You know, like, on paper, on the menu, it doesn’t seem to work, but it works. They’re comfort food with class, and everybody roots for that.”

In wedding photos, Stefani appears in a custom white Vera Wang Haute silk georgette gown with a sweetheart plunging neckline, fitted bodice and high low hand tumbled tulle skirt. Shelton appears in a black tuxedo jacket, white shirt, black vest and light bow tie paired with blue jeans.
