Brad Paisley reflects on the meaning of Thanksgiving as the holiday nears. This time of the year has the country singer feeling a little nostalgic for holidays past.

Paisley reflected on the long drive he would make from Nashville to West Virginia as a college student. Paisley attended Belmont University where he followed his dream of being a country music star in Nashville. Paisley’s hometown was in Glen Dale, West Virginia, hundreds of miles away.

The country singer would go home every Thanksgiving on his school break,

“I remember when I first moved to Nashville,” Paisley said, according to Universal Music Group. “And the holiday of going home, and taking a week there where you get a school break. I was at Belmont and I would drive up to West Virginia to see the family. And I hadn’t seen them usually since August. That’s really what Thanksgiving is about. I guess it’s that holiday.”

Brad Paisley Values Thanksgiving

Paisley believes more people go home during Thanksgiving than at Christmas time. For him, it’s a way he can reunite with his family every year.

“When I think it’s more common for people to go back to where they’re from on that holiday than it is even on Christmas,” he said. “I heard some stat that it’s almost, you know, 3 to 2 in terms of how many people go back where they’re from then.”

Paisley also reflected on starting a family of his own and hosting Thanksgiving himself. Paisley shares two children with his wife Kimberly Williams.

“And so that for me always kept me grounded,” Paisley said. “And it’s been very interesting to start these traditions here and learn not to leave. I remember the first year I didn’t leave you know. And if you have the kids first in the family your set. Because that’s where the tradition starts you know.”
