Carrie Underwood and husband Mike Fisher spoke candidly about their struggles to conceive their second son and how a string of miscarriages shook their faith and family.

In the most recent episode of “I am Second,” a Christian devotional YouTube series focusing on faith, the couple said they were lost after two miscarriages.

“It sounds wrong when you say it,” Underwood said, opening up about the miscarriages. “It’s one of those bad things that happen to other people, you know what I mean. Like so many things in the world, it’s not something you envision yourself having to deal with.”

The miscarriages happened within a relatively short period of time, they said in the video. Following the second one, Fisher said he was angry with God.

“You pray and you pray and you pray,” he said. “Sometimes I think I’m guilty of expecting God to be a genie in a bottle. It’s not that. (You want to know) Why is this happening? You don’t know why and sometimes you’ll never figure out why.”

But after praying for guidance, Fisher said he got an answer. He explained to Underwood that God had told him that they would have a second son and they would name him Jacob. She wanted another child, but wasn’t sure she should could handle another miscarriage.

But they soon were pregnant again. One day, Carrie Underwood said she started to feel odd. She called her doctor believing she had lost the baby. The doctor said the prognosis looked grim but that she should still come in for a check up.

Underwood said she crawled into bed with her son Isaiah and cried, praying for answers or at least for the pain to end.

“I told Him that we needed to have a baby or not ever,” she said, fighting back tears. “I couldn’t keep going down that road anymore.”

She visited her doctor a few days later expecting to hear more bad news. But that wasn’t what they were told. She hadn’t lost the baby after all. Everything appeared normal for their unborn son.

Jacob was born in 2019 happy and healthy.

Underwood and her oldest son, Isaiah, have a duet on her new album of Christmas songs My Gift, which came out earlier this year. The 5-year-old sings on The Little Drummer Boy. The song will be included in Underwood’s upcoming Christmas special on HBO Max.
