Parents are generally always your biggest support system…at least to your face. However, Carrie Underwood’s mother explains why she never thought her daughter would win American Idol.

Carole Underwood, the country artist’s mother, spoke on a new episode of “Through Mom’s Eyes.” In the show, Carole recalls Carrie Underwood’s journey to stardom to Today host Sheinelle Jones.

The proud mother of three girls notes how her youngest child, Carrie has terrible stage fright until the microphone was in her hand. She says that Carrie Underwood “truly had a gift from God.”

Carrie Underwood was only 21 years old when she decided to audition for American Idol. As a journalism and mass communication student at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, Carole thought the fame associated with the show might help Carrie secure a job after graduation.

The parents had to see their little bird leave the nest, so when Carrie Underwood left for the airport to head to her American Idol audition, nerves and emotions were high for everyone.

“She told [her father] ‘I’m just so nervous.’ And he said, ‘Well, you know what, if you don’t want to go, we can just turn around and go back home.’ And she said, ‘No, no, I want to go. I’ll never know if I don’t go ahead and go,'” Carole Underwood explained. “So we went. We waited at the airport until we saw that plane take off, and then it was like, ‘My gosh, you know, she’s gone from us right now.’ So that’s how it began.”

Carrie Underwood’s Rise to Fame

Although Carrie Underwood was an instant star on American Idol, Carole reveals that she “always dreaded” watching her daughter compete on the show.

“It was just too harrowing for me. And I’m sure it was for her, too.”

Even after the exciting win, Carole Underwood still didn’t think it would go much further than that. Let alone that her daughter would be one of the most prominent names in the music industry.

“It didn’t really dawn on me at that particular moment what was possibly going to happen,” Underwood said. “Up to this time, it was just a competition. She won, and then my next thought [was] ‘Well, where do we go from here?’ You know? ‘I don’t know how to do anything about any of this.'”

Even with all the roaring fans and endless fame, Carole says that her daughter will already remain just that.

“You don’t realize that celebrities truly are just people,” said Underwood. “They wash their clothes. They fold their clothes. You know? I just don’t want her to change how she is, and I think she doesn’t.”

Carrie Underwood has always been known for her humble, down-to-earth demeanor. All the more reason to love the country icon.
