Carrie Underwood Performs ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ on Kelly Clarkson Show

by Matthew Wilson

Carrie Underwood takes listeners to church with this soulful rendition of “Mary, Did You Know?” She performed the song for audiences on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

Standing amid a sea of candles, Underwood is powerful as she belts the gospel hymn. Though the song has been around for years, Underwood makes it completely her own with a cover that puts the Christ back into Christmas. The live performance was a gift to listeners in the final days leading up to Christmas.

“Mary, Did You Know?” incorporates religious imagery as a tribute to Jesus Christ and his mother. The narrator of the song sings of the biblical trials and tribulations such as the crucifixion. The song questions whether Jesus’s mother Mary knew all the extraordinary things he would do before he was born. Hence the title of the song.

Mark Lowery wrote the lyrics back in 1984. But Michael English didn’t record the song until almost a decade later in 1991. Since then, it’s been a popular one among musicians especially country singers. Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd put their own spin on the song in 1996. More recently, Dolly Parton also covered the song.

Carrie Underwood Releases ‘My Gift’

The song featured on Underwood’s album “My Gift,” which released earlier this year. Upon release, the album topped the charts and proved to be an early Christmas present for the country singer. Underwood has had Christmas on the mind this year, working on the album over the summer to make a September release.

“For Christmas, I feel like it was always about just us being together,” Underwood said of the album. “So, more than anything, I wanted to make this album full of so much love and so much heart. And, we wanted to bring it to life in a visual way. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. … Every time I am on stage it is a gift for me to get to sing.”

So far, Underwood has been bringing the Christmas magic to fans across the nation.
