Carrie Underwood released her new Christmas album My Gift on Friday, Sept. 25. Since then, the singer has been discussing how cathartic it’s been to have worked on the album. The year has been unpredictable and tumultuous, and creating this album gave her a more festive, creative space to work in.

Part of what made the album such a delight for Underwood is the fact that she had some important collaborators to work with. Not only did she enlist the help of her 5-year-old son Isaiah to sing “Little Drummer Boy,” but she worked alongside soul singer John Legend as well.

Legend wrote “Hallelujah” and sent it to Underwood while she worked on My Gift’s track list.

“I was deep into making the album, and this one kind of came in. He sent it to us kind of at the end,” Underwood shared.

“It was like, ‘Well, I love the song. I feel like this is a puzzle piece I didn’t know was missing, but now that I’ve heard it, I have to have it,'” she said. “And so we just put the ask back, ‘Thank you for sending, do you want to sing a part with me, too?'”

Carrie Underwood stated that the pair weren’t originally going to create a duet, but she asked if it could happen. Sure enough, it did. The rest is history.

You can listen to the song above to get into the holiday spirit. It’ll be October soon enough, after all.
