Country superstar, Carrie Underwood reveals the details behind her hit song, “Mama’s Song.”
The song is about a daughter reassuring her mother that she raised her well. The daughter then shares with the mother that she has met a man who she thinks could be the one.
Underwood sings, “Mama, you taught me to do the right things. So, now you have to let your baby fly…And he Is good, so good. He treats your little girl like a real man should, he is good, so good. He makes promises he keeps. No, he’s never gonna leave. So, don’t you worry about me. Don’t you worry about me.”
“Mama’s Song,” is the final single from Underwood’s album, Play On. The song reached number two on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It also received a Grammy Awards nomination for Best Country Solo Performance. The song won two American Country Awards for Female Single of the Year and Female Music Video of the Year. Additionally, the song won a BMI Award for Songwriter of the Year.
Underwood co-wrote the song with songwriters Kara DioGuardi, Marty Frederiksen, and Luke Laird. During an interview, Laird, opens up about what it was like writing a song with Carrie Underwood.
We wrote this song on the same day as ‘Undo It,'” says Laird. “We wrote it, and everybody was like, ‘We’ve got time, let’s do another one.’ We figured that we wrote this cool, rockin’, uptempo thing, let’s shift gears,” he says.
Is Carrie Underwood’s Song About Her Husband?
During the same interview, Laird shares that Underwood came up with the first line of the song.
“So Marty and I started playing that slow musical thing. Kara and Carrie seemed to be into it. Carrie just came out with that first line, ‘Mama, you taught me to do the right things.’ And this was before she was engaged, obviously, but she was in a relationship. We knew where this was coming from. Nobody was like, ‘Oh, are you and Mike [Fisher] going to get married?’ We just went with it and thought it was something cool to write,” says Laird.
Laird says everyone in the writer’s room related to the song in their own way.
“It was really special for Kara, too, because she had lost her mom. You could tell they were really close. You could see Kara and Carrie bonding, talking about their moms. For me, I was coming from the place where I wasn’t engaged to [my wife] Beth yet, but I was thinking, ‘I hope she feels this way about me!'” says Laird.
Laird says that he even played the song for his wife’s mother.
“Beth’s mom thinks that’s the best song I’ve ever written because she’s a mom and her daughter married me. I played it for Beth’s mom in the car, and she was all teary-eyed. It was cool,” says Laird.
