Last night, CMT brought some of the biggest and brightest stars in country music together for their Artists of the Year event. Mickey Guyton, Kelsea Ballerini, Kane Brown, Luke Combs, and Chris Stapleton all took home honors.

When Chris Stapleton took the stage to accept his award, his gratitude was front-and-center. However, he wasn’t just grateful to take home the crystal statuette, it was more than that. He touched on how good it felt to be in a room full of other great musicians. Furthermore, he said he could feel the love in the room. Check out his touching speech below.

Stapleton has attended the Artists of the Year show before. In fact, this makes his fourth Artist of the Year award from CMT. However, this one, he said, felt different. After over a year of digital award shows, live-streamed concerts, and other remote gatherings, being there together felt even more special. “It’s the first time I’ve been in a room with a lot of folks,” he said. He went on, saying, “We’ve done some of these things remotely and whatnot. But, I feel a lot of love in the room tonight. A lot of love in the room tonight.” He added, “That’s what music is about. It’s about love.”

Chris Stapleton didn’t just feel the love, he added to it. He took a moment to shout out the other artists who took the stage that night. “So inspiring to listen to your performances. So inspiring to hear your words and your stories. I’m humbled to be in the room with some of the folks that I’m here with tonight.”

Then, Stapleton took a moment to thank CMT, the fans, his wife, their kids, and his family. Chris Stapleton might have one of the best voices in the genre, but you’ll never catch him taking it for granted.

Boyz II Men Cover Chris Stapleton’s “Cold”

Before Stapleton started his speech, he gave a nod to the group that took the stage before him. “I don’t think that’s Chris Stapleton’s ‘Cold’ anymore. That’s Boyz II Men’s ‘Cold’ now.”

That statement is sure to bring a smile to the faces of many of Stapleton’s fans. It’s reminiscent of how “Tennessee Whiskey,” isn’t David Allen Coe’s song anymore. That track belongs to Chris Stapleton. The legendary soul group definitely took that song and made it their own. Watch their performance below, it’ll give you goosebumps.

Their performance is amazing. The beatboxing and string solo really bring their rendition to life. Some of the coolest shots in the video, though, are of Chris and Morgane Stapleton loving the show. You can see the joy on both of their faces as Boyz II Men made “Cold” their own.
