Singer-songwriter Chris Stapleton is up for four Academy of Country Music Awards this year. But perhaps nothing has topped the moment in 2011 when country legend George Strait agreed to record Stapleton’s song “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright.”

In a recent appearance on Audacy Country’s “Superstar Power Hour,” Stapleton talked about the song he co-wrote with Nashville songwriter Al Anderson.

“I sang on it with [Strait], and my wife sang on it with him too,” Stapleton said, per CMT. Also, “I didn’t ever record that. I wrote that, we pitched it to George, and he took it.”

Chris Stapleton Says ‘It Was a Big Deal’

The moment when Strait took that song was a career-defining one for Stapleton. He said it really meant a lot to him.

“It was a big deal to me,” Stapleton said.

And that’s coming from someone who’s done plenty of networking in the music industry. With lots of happy musical memories to choose from, that one stands out, Stapleton said.

“I don’t know if that’s my favorite song, as much as the experience of it for me is very cool,” he added. “But I’ve gotten to have lots of cool experiences. So many great artists and friends that have been helpful to me.”

For now, Stapleton is not sweating his ACM Award nominations. He’s just looking forward to playing live again. What matters to him, he said, is whether his music has meant something to people. At the very least, he hopes it means enough for people to return to concert venues as that becomes safer.

Stapleton Achieves His Second No. 1 Hit

This week, the Chris Stapleton song “Starting Over” reached the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. It marked the second No. 1 hit for the musician. His breakthrough song “Tennessee Whiskey” topped the chart for two weeks in November of 2015.

“Starting Over” is the lead single from Stapleton’s album of the same title. He wrote the song with Dave Cobb, who also co-produced the album.

Furthermore, the song gained by 23% in radio airplay over the past week, shooting up from 8 to 2 on the Country Airplay chart.
