Is it even a Chris Stapleton song if we’re not soul-searching by the end of it?
Stapleton got us again when he performed the song from his Starting Over album, “When I’m With You.” The song is about reflecting on your life, coming to terms with aging, and loving someone through it all. During the song, Stapleton sings, “I’m forty years old and it looks like the end of the rainbow. Ain’t no pot of gold. The things that I’ve done I doubt anyone will remember after I’m gone…But when I’m with you, I feel like a dreamer that’s had all his dreams come true. Like my skies are all blue when I’m with you.”
The album, Starting Over, spent 21 weeks on the Billboard Album Sales chart and peaked in the number two spot. This week, Stapleton promoted the album and flawlessly performed “When I’m With You,” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Can Everyone Please Just Acknowledge How Amazing Chris Stapleton Is?
Many of us grew to love Chris Stapleton after the release of his debut album, Traveller, in 2015. Stapleton and the album basically swept the CMAs winning Album Of The Year, Best New Artist, and Male Vocalist Of The Year. Shortly after, Traveller went platinum. However, Chris has been around the country music scene for far longer than his debut album suggests. In fact, he’s been writing songs for country music legends since 2001. Stapleton wrote George Strait’s “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright,” and Kenny Chesney’s “Never Wanted Nothing More.” He also wrote Luke Bryan’s “Drink a Beer,” and Thomas Rhett’s “Crash and Burn.” Additionally, he wrote Darius Rucker’s “Come Back Song,” and Josh Turner’s “Your Man.” Chris has also written songs for Lee Ann Womack, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Tim McGraw, Adele, and Justin Timberlake.
“Wow,” is all we’ll say to start. But we have more. Since the release of his debut album, Stapleton has released three other albums. The most recent of which is Starting Over. For anyone who hasn’t listened to it yet, the album is a masterpiece. As he always masterfully does, Chris pinpoints the emotional immensity that comes with the human experience, and the way that experience simultaneously hurts us deeply and bring us together.
During an interview, Chris shared what he hopes fans can connect with when listening to his album.
“If there’s a theme, hopefully, there’s a theme of truth somewhere in it. And what I mean by that is hopefully we’re conveying in the songs some experiences that feel real. Hopefully, people can find themselves in those songs and in the album. And for me if I’m looking for a theme it’s that kind of, I don’t know, that thing that binds us all together as humans,” said Stapleton.
