The 55th annual CMA Awards were entertaining, to say the least. Spectators at the event caught Carrie Underwood’s less than amused “side-eye” following a joke about immunization from show host Luke Bryan.
The country music event took place at Bridgestone Area last night in Nashville, Tennessee, and aired live via ABC. Bryan opened the show with a wisecrack aimed at events’ COVID-19 safety measure.
“We’re following all the health protocols to keep everyone safe and it’s so great to be here with all my fellow artists, tested and together,” Bryan said. “Or immunized? Who is it? Just playin’!”
The remark seemed to hit below the belt for some. Most notably, the recent controversy over star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The NFL player initially told the press he was “immunized” from the virus. Then later admitted he was unvaccinated. Now, he’s positive for COVID-19.
Underwood Is Clearly Not Impressed
Cameras didn’t miss Carrie Underwood’s prompt reaction to the remark. She looked away with a dramatic side-eye reaction. Her expression made it pretty clear she didn’t appreciate the hosts’ intended humor.
Underwood’s husband, Mike Fisher has not been shy in stating his support for Rodgers’ decision against getting the vaccine. Fisher noted his opinion of the matter on Instagram stating, “I believe in the freedom to choose what we put in our bodies and the freedom of conscience. I agree with him in that the science clearly shows the vaccinated spread covid at basically the same rate as the unvaccinated,”
Rodgers continues to face a lot of heat regarding the issue, but he’s not backing down. Standing firm in his beliefs, he said, “Some of the rules, to me, are not based in science at all. They’re purely trying to out and shame people, like needing to wear a mask at a podium when every person in the room is vaccinated, and wearing a mask — makes no sense to me. If you got vaccinated to protect yourself from a virus I don’t have as an unvaccinated individual, then why are you worried about anything I could give you?”
Fans React to Carrie’s “Side-Eye” Expression
Underwood’s reaction didn’t go unnoticed. Fans took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the matter.
“Great @carrieunderwood side-eye,” said one viewer.
Another person wrote, “Carrie Underwood looked quite annoyed when they showed her in the audience.”
“No he was making a coy joke about the Aaron Rodger’s issue…that’s why the camera panned to Carrie Underwood because her husband has been publicly supporting Rodgers,” one spectator responded.
“We’re only ten minutes into the #CMAawards and my favourite part of the show will be Luke Bryan talking about being immunized and then panning to Carrie Underwood after Mike Fisher’s vaccine comments this week,” said one viewer.
“Carrie’s hubby supporting Aaron Rogers LOL” after someone commented that it was an “extremely awkward opening,” wrote another.
