On Friday, country legend Reba McEntire and fellow country singer Cody Johnson talked about their new music video in a live stream on YouTube.
The two musicians sat down to share details about their new song “Dear Rodeo” and its accompanying music video. The pair both have a history within the rodeo circuit. Before her career in music, Reba McEntire was a barrel racer. Additionally, Cody Johnson used to be a bull rider. However, both of the musicians joked that their rodeo careers weren’t exactly successful.
The country duo spoke about some of the behind the scenes details on the video. Johnson said he came up with the idea of the music video’s location: an empty rodeo arena. The pair held their interview in the same empty arena before debuting the music video, which Johnson said the video’s producer captured perfectly.
“You can give [producer Shaun Silva] an idea, like I had the idea for the empty arena. And then he took it and ran with it. He’s like, ‘Did I capture your idea?’ I’m going, ‘Yea. You captured it and made it better,'” Johnson explained of the video’s original idea.
“He’s done a great job,” McEntire added. “It’s a great song. You guys did a great job writing the song, and I’m just thrilled to death to get to be a part of it and get to sing it with you.”
Cody Johnson Has Only Filmed Two Music Videos
Johnson goes on to admit that this is only the second music video he’s starred in during his music career. In fact, McEntire couldn’t believe it and shared a laugh with Johnson over it.
“I’ve been a little bit nervous this whole time. The first music video was ‘On My Way to You’ and I just sat on a porch and I drank Michelob Ultra. I hid it behind me and I sat there and played my little guitar. I did it four or five times and they were like, ‘That’s good. That’s all we need.’ And I thought, this music video crap is easy,” Johnson said with a laugh.
However, Johnson admits it’s much more intimidating working with McEntire who is a seasoned professional.
“This is a little bit more difficult. It’s a little intimidating sitting next to a pro. They read all her stats off a little while ago. And I was like, good lord, I’ve got a platinum single. That’s about it,” said Johnson of his iconic partner in their new song.
Johnson goes on to explain that the “Dear Rodeo” music video became bigger than expected, so they decided to film a documentary about the experience. The team tried to capture and apply how McEntire, Johnson, and the rest of the crew felt about the song in the video. The two country artists both agreed it’s a special song to each of them.
“It’s a video that’s going to touch your heart I hope just like it touched mine the first time I heard the song. The video is rich and wonderful. And Cody did a great job,” McEntire said of “Dear Rodeo.”
“This is the most personal thing I’ve ever written. I’ll just say it, it’s the most vulnerable I’ve ever been on paper,” Johnson says of the song. “When you’re hearing these lyrics, just know me and Reba have lived them. It wasn’t always easy. If you’re one of those people out there that needs to hear this about reinvention, or dealing with failure, this song’s for you.”
