Colter Wall Is a Real-Life ‘Yellowstone’ Character in New Cowboy Pics Gearing Up for Upcoming Tour

by Clayton Edwards

Country music is full of songs about the cowboy lifestyle. In fact, there’s a whole sub-genre of country music dedicated to cowboy music. However, a large portion of the singers who cut those songs don’t live the life. At the most, they own a plot of land or have ridden a horse a time or two. On the other hand, there are folks like Colter Wall. When he’s not in the studio or on the road, he’s on horseback.

Those who follow Colter Wall’s Instagram know that he spent most of the summer of 2020 working on a friend’s ranch in Texas. In the evenings, he took time to record “The Bunkhouse Sessions,” for his YouTube channel. In those videos, he sits in the ranch’s bunkhouse with his guitar and plays a selection of songs. Additionally, the Swift Current, Saskatchewan native has his own herd of cattle that wear the CW brand. This experience in the field lends some authenticity to Wall’s music that you won’t find with many artists in the game today.

Colter Wall is currently gearing up for a fall tour. He recently posted some photos showing how he is getting ready to hit the road. His fans won’t be surprised that one of those posts shows Colter on horseback working his cattle.

In these photos, many might think that Colter Wall is calling back to a bygone era. However, countless people are still out there on the prairie, sitting atop a horse, and maintaining herds of cattle. In fact, Colter dedicated his latest album, Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, to those who brave the elements to put food on the table.

Colter Wall Hits the Road This Week

Colter Wall recently announced that his next tour is right around the corner. In fact, the tour kicks off in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on September 9th. However, when he announced the tour on Instagram, Wall added two seemingly unrelated photos. The first of the pair shows that the 26-year-old singer-songwriter is already getting that weather-beaten cowboy look about him.

If you want to know how connected Colter Wall is to the cowboy lifestyle, just listen to the song, “Houlihans at the Holiday Inn,” from his latest album. The song talks about how the excitement of being on tour slowly melts away. In the end, he is left with his longing for the open range, his horse, and the cattle he watches over. However, tour obligations keep him on the road. So, he has to settle for practicing his roping at the hotel before and after shows. You can hear the homesickness in his voice when he sings the chorus.

“Haven’t put boot heel to belly / Since can’t remember when. / And I’ll sing you all the songs of my working cowboy kin. / Then it’s back to throwing Houlihans  at the Holiday Inn.”
